Earth Journalism Network (EJN)

Grant Amount: €12,000

Application Deadline:

30 March 2025

About Organisation

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is committed to strengthening global environmental reporting, with a focus on biodiversity, climate change, and conservation. Recognizing that biodiversity loss and climate change are interconnected challenges, EJN works to ensure that media coverage highlights the urgency of conservation alongside climate action.

At COP16 in Cali, Colombia, and COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, experts emphasized the need for accelerated efforts to protect biodiversity and combat climate change. However, biodiversity-related issues often receive less attention and funding compared to climate action. To address this gap, EJN supports media initiatives that enhance public awareness of biodiversity challenges and solutions.

Through its Biodiversity Media Initiative, EJN provides grants, training, and resources to journalists and media organizations worldwide. This initiative aims to improve the quality and quantity of biodiversity reporting, equipping journalists with the skills and knowledge needed to cover complex environmental topics effectively. By fostering in-depth, solution-oriented journalism, EJN seeks to drive impactful storytelling that influences policies and promotes sustainable environmental practices. The network prioritizes projects that emphasize the linkages between biodiversity, climate change, and human well-being, ensuring that conservation remains a critical part of global discourse.

About the Grant

The Biodiversity Media Grants 2025, offered by EJN, aim to strengthen biodiversity reporting by supporting media organizations in producing high-quality content. The grant seeks to address the lack of media attention on biodiversity, despite its crucial role in climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.

This initiative provides funding for projects that enhance public awareness of biodiversity threats while highlighting conservation efforts. Eligible projects should focus on delivering well-researched, solution-driven journalism that educates audiences, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries. Grants may also support capacity-building efforts for journalists, fostering skills, networks, and expertise in biodiversity reporting.

Priority will be given to proposals covering topics such as nature-based solutions, genetic resource benefit-sharing, and alternative conservation strategies. Projects can include investigative reporting, multimedia storytelling, and collaborations among media outlets to amplify biodiversity coverage. Proposals with innovative approaches, such as data visualization, fact-checking tools, or training workshops, are encouraged.

Successful applicants will receive funding to develop impactful media content, with support extending to mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration opportunities. By empowering journalists, the grant seeks to make biodiversity conservation a central topic in global environmental discourse.

Who can Apply?

The grant is open to media organizations, journalist networks, civil society groups, and academic institutions based in low- and middle-income countries. Special consideration will be given to projects operating in biodiversity-rich regions or areas facing severe biodiversity loss.

Eligible applicants must demonstrate a commitment to environmental journalism, with a focus on biodiversity reporting. While NGOs and environmental groups may apply, priority will be given to those directly affiliated with professional journalists, media outlets, or journalism schools. Applicants should propose projects that enhance biodiversity coverage and align with the broader goal of increasing public awareness and policy engagement.

Proposals rooted in advocacy or political campaigning will not be considered. Additionally, applicants must have a working proficiency in English, as all applications and communications will be conducted in English. EJN encourages collaboration between journalists, researchers, and policymakers to strengthen the impact of proposed projects.

Past EJN grantees may apply, but preference will not be given to organizations that received grants in 2024. Transparency regarding the use of generative AI in proposal preparation is required, and unethical conduct, such as submitting AI-generated content as original work, may result in disqualification.

How to Apply?

Interested applicants must submit a detailed proposal outlining their project’s objectives, methodology, expected outcomes, and budget requirements. Proposals should emphasize innovation, feasibility, and real-world impact. Applications should also specify the number of planned media outputs and, if applicable, any capacity-building activities.

Applications must be submitted by March 30, 2025. Late submissions will not be considered, and selected applicants will be notified in April 2025.

Last Date to Apply

The final deadline for submission is March 30, 2025. Successful applicants will begin their projects in May 2025, with a completion timeline of 12 months.
