About Organisation
openDemocracy is an independent international media organisation committed to high-quality, public-interest journalism that challenges power and promotes democratic values. Headquartered in London with teams across multiple continents, it amplifies underrepresented voices and investigates issues of global significance. Its reporting has influenced policy debates, triggered legal reforms, and sparked parliamentary and judicial action. Mission-driven and impact-focused, openDemocracy works to build a more open, egalitarian, and accountable world through investigative reporting, campaigning journalism, and collaboration with diverse journalists, researchers, and experts worldwide.
About the Grant
The Tech Reporting Fellowship, run by openDemocracy in collaboration with Tech Policy Press, is a 12-month, UK-based journalism fellowship focused on the intersection of technology, democracy, and public policy. The fellow will be embedded within openDemocracy’s UK newsroom and receive editorial mentorship from Tech Policy Press editors in Europe and the US. Fellows are expected to produce regular reported analysis, features, and at least one long-term investigation, with work published across both platforms to reach wide and influential audiences.
Who can Apply?
Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest or background in journalism, technology policy, media, AI, or related fields. While candidates with journalism experience are preferred, researchers, lawyers, technologists, and public policy professionals seeking to transition into journalism are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be committed to producing rigorous, public-interest journalism, meeting deadlines, and engaging with fast-moving news cycles. The fellowship is UK-based, and candidates should be prepared to work closely with editors, participate in newsroom activities, and contribute consistently throughout the fellowship period.
How to Apply?
Applicants must submit a complete application package including work samples, a detailed cover letter outlining their reporting approach, feature pitches, a CV, and professional references. The application should clearly demonstrate interest in technology and democracy, reporting skills, and capacity for investigative work. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is strongly encouraged.
Application Deadline
