About the Grant

The Carl Menger Fellowship is a competitive, one-year online fellowship designed for PhD students from diverse academic backgrounds. The programme introduces fellows to foundational and contemporary thinkers in political economy, particularly from the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools. Fellows participate in nine structured online seminars featuring in-depth discussions and guided readings. The fellowship encourages critical engagement with ideas that may not be covered in standard graduate curricula. Participants also gain access to a wider academic network of Mercatus scholars, alumni, and researchers working in political economy.

Who can Apply?

The fellowship is open to students who will be enrolled in an accredited PhD programme during the 2026–2027 academic year. Applicants from any discipline, including economics, philosophy, political science, and sociology, are eligible. Candidates must be able to commit to nine monthly online colloquia, each consisting of two 75-minute discussion sessions. Applicants should demonstrate a research or teaching interest that would benefit from deeper engagement with key writings and debates in political economy.

How to Apply?

Interested candidates must submit their application for the 2026–2027 academic year by the stated deadline. Applications will be reviewed after submission closes, and shortlisted candidates will be evaluated based on academic interest, commitment, and alignment with the fellowship’s objectives. Final selection decisions will be announced several weeks after the review process begins.
