About the Grant
The BES Small Research Grants support new and innovative ecological research where researchers have limited alternative funding opportunities. Grants of up to £5,000 can support projects with a clear ecological science focus and high potential to advance ecological knowledge. Research may be conducted anywhere in the world and projects can address a wide range of ecological questions. Where research incorporates disciplines such as sociology or economics, these elements must be clearly integrated into the project’s ecological and scientific objectives.
Who can Apply?
Applicants must be BES members, and grants are awarded to individuals rather than organisations. Projects must normally be completed within 12 months and cannot simply form part of a larger already-funded study. Funding is not available for work undertaken as part of undergraduate or master’s degrees or fellowships. PhD students can apply for research separate from their existing funded research, or for a distinct research component where only their salary is already covered. Applicants conducting research outside their home country must demonstrate collaboration with relevant local organisations, agencies, NGOs or communities.
How to Apply?
Applicants should prepare a clear ecological research proposal explaining the scientific question, expected impact, methodology, feasibility and justification for requested resources. Two references are required: a personal statement from a supervisor or employer and a supporting statement from a host institution or organisation. Both references must be completed through the Flexi-Grant system before the application can be submitted. Independently emailed or mailed references are not accepted.
