About Organisation
The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) is a Canada-based global research organisation that brings together researchers from different disciplines and countries to address major questions in science and society. Its model is built around long-term interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing researchers to exchange ideas, develop new research directions and build international networks. CIFAR supports researchers through research programmes, mentorship, leadership development and knowledge mobilisation. Its Global Scholars initiative is designed to support promising early-career researchers as they establish independent research careers and connect them with leading scholars across disciplines and institutions.
About the Grant
The CIFAR Global Scholars Program 2027–2029 is a two-year opportunity for early-career researchers to become members of a CIFAR interdisciplinary research programme. Scholars receive CAD $100,000 in unrestricted research support, administered through their home institution, which can be used for research activities, teaching release, trainee support and conference travel. In addition to funding, the programme provides mentorship, international collaboration, leadership development, networking and opportunities to pursue high-risk, high-reward interdisciplinary research. Scholars can also apply for additional seed funding for collaborative projects.
Who can Apply?
The programme is open to researchers from all countries who hold a PhD or equivalent and have a full-time position at a higher-education or research institution that provides responsibility for independent research and supervision or teaching of graduate trainees. Applicants must have started their first eligible post-PhD position between 1 July 2022 and 31 December 2026, subject to applicable exceptions. Their position must provide appropriate independence for the full 2027–2029 term. Research must complement the themes of at least one recruiting CIFAR programme. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible. Applicants must also be able to participate in CIFAR meetings and communicate fluently in English.
How to Apply?
Applicants should identify a CIFAR research programme that closely matches their research interests and prepare the required application materials. The application includes research and programme-fit statements, leadership and communication goals, an equity, diversity and inclusion statement, a research description for a general audience, an academic CV and a narrative CV. CIFAR allows separate applications when a researcher wishes to apply to more than one recruiting programme. Applications must be submitted online before the stated deadline.
