About Organisation

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), in collaboration with Common Purpose, leads the AFC Fellowship—an influential leadership development program bridging the Global South and North. AFC is a leading pan-African multilateral development finance institution focused on driving sustainable growth and infrastructure development across Africa, while Common Purpose is renowned for its pioneering work in leadership education worldwide. Together, they have created a unique platform aimed at fostering collaboration, dialogue, and innovative problem-solving around global challenges, especially the climate crisis. Now in its third year, the AFC Fellowship builds the capacity of emerging leaders from Africa, the wider Global South, and the Global North, equipping them with the skills to operate effectively beyond formal authority. This initiative not only nurtures individual leadership potential but also cultivates a global network of professionals committed to tackling climate change and bridging developmental divides. By engaging participants from diverse backgrounds—spanning public, private, academic, and grassroots sectors—it creates an inclusive environment where fresh ideas and transformative partnerships can flourish. The Fellowship’s proven track record includes over 90 alumni who have gone on to influence policies, strengthen communities, and drive impactful projects worldwide, making it a sought-after program for aspiring change-makers.

About the Grant

The AFC Fellowship seeks mid-career professionals with a passion for climate action and bridging the Global South-North divide. Applicants should typically have at least five years of professional experience and demonstrate leadership potential through their work, community involvement, or innovation. While the program is open to participants from all sectors—public, private, academic, non-profit, and grassroots organizations—it prioritizes diversity to ensure a dynamic exchange of perspectives. Selection is based on professional achievements, a clear interest in climate-related issues, and a commitment to fostering cross-boundary collaboration. Candidates must first be accepted into the Climate Challenge Leadership Programme, the gateway to the Fellowship. This involves participating in sessions on Leading Beyond Authority, engaging in climate challenge simulations, and collaborating with a diverse cohort of 40 participants annually. The program is designed for individuals who are ready to operate outside traditional hierarchies, embrace inclusivity, and contribute to shaping sustainable, equitable solutions on a global scale. Strong interpersonal skills, openness to different viewpoints, and a dedication to driving change are essential qualities for selection.
