About Organisation

Global Action to End Smoking (GA) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating the global smoking epidemic. It focuses on accelerating science-based initiatives to end combustible tobacco use, which remains the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. The organization operates in three main areas: Health and Science Research, Cessation Education, and Agricultural Transformation. GA aims to reduce the global tobacco burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and marginalized populations within high-income countries (HICs). Its mission involves advancing public health through innovative tobacco cessation programs, including efforts to correct misconceptions about nicotine. GA works with institutions that focus on public health, disease prevention, and behavioral health, facilitating global research and implementation efforts to support sustainable smoking cessation strategies. The organization promotes initiatives that deliver accurate, science-backed information on smoking cessation options to various stakeholders such as smokers, healthcare providers, journalists, and the general public.

About the Grant

Global Action to End Smoking invites proposals for its innovative Advancing Smoking Cessation through Dissemination, Implementation & Training Grants. The goal of this grant program is to disseminate science-based information about smoking cessation tools and address the widespread misconceptions about nicotine use compared to combustible tobacco. The program aims to increase awareness of cessation options, correct misinformation, and highlight the role of reduced-risk nicotine products. GA encourages research and proposals for large-scale, investigator-initiated interventions, especially those focused on LMICs and marginalized populations in HICs. The grant will fund programs that address barriers to smoking cessation, such as misinformation, and help smokers transition to less harmful alternatives. Proposals are expected to be grounded in prior research, featuring clear descriptions of program elements, a rationale for the approach, an evaluation plan, and identification of barriers and strategies for overcoming them. GA prioritizes interdisciplinary approaches and supports diverse institutions, including academic and health research centers. Proposals that demonstrate real-world applicability and scalability of interventions will be given preference.

Who can Apply?

This grant is open to institutions such as academic research centers, health-related think tanks, and organizations with experience in public health, behavioral health, epidemiology, economics, or health communications. Applicants should be registered in their country of origin and have the capacity to accept funding from a U.S.-based nonprofit. While prior experience in tobacco control, smoking cessation, or harm reduction approaches is preferred, it is not a requirement. GA encourages proposals from interdisciplinary teams and institutions, even if they are not subject matter experts in health communications or educational interventions. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of the smoking cessation landscape, particularly in LMICs or marginalized populations, and be prepared to provide clear and evidence-based approaches to addressing nicotine misperceptions. Programs should be tailored to the population and setting, with a focus on practical, scalable, and feasible interventions. Applicants should also be prepared to provide a rationale for selecting the target population, outline barriers to success, and propose strategies to address misinformation and other challenges.
