About Organisation

The IKI Small Grants Programme, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, plays a vital role in advancing climate and biodiversity action under the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Since 2019, the programme has empowered local actors such as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to address climate change and biodiversity loss effectively. Operating in ODA-eligible countries, IKI Small Grants aims to enable these organisations to create tangible, measurable impacts through their initiatives. With an emphasis on building local capacity, the programme supports both grassroots-level projects and funding institutions. By targeting the areas of greenhouse gas mitigation, climate adaptation, conservation of natural carbon sinks/REDD+, and biodiversity protection, the initiative fosters meaningful contributions to global environmental goals while addressing local challenges.

About the Grant

IKI Small Grants provides financial support through two distinct lines: International Calls and Funding Institutions. Projects funded under International Calls focus on non-profit initiatives related to climate and biodiversity, with grants ranging from 60,000 to 200,000 euros for a duration of one to three years. The Funding Institutions line supports national and regional institutions to conduct their own calls for local proposals, offering up to 950,000 euros per grant for a period of up to three years. Both lines aim to strengthen local actors’ capacities, ensuring sustainable, scalable, and impactful results. By 2029, approximately 220 projects and 18 institutions will be funded. The grants prioritize innovative solutions in emission reduction, climate adaptation, conservation of carbon sinks, and biodiversity preservation.

Who can Apply?

Funding is open to non-profit organisations in ODA-eligible countries. For International Calls, eligible applicants include sub-national, national, and regional organisations with at least three years of relevant experience and annual revenue between 60,000 and 500,000 euros. For-profit organisations can also apply if their project objectives are not-for-profit. The Funding Institutions line targets national and regional institutions in ODA countries with a minimum annual turnover of 500,000 euros, proven experience in managing grants, and at least three years of operational history. All applicants must address local challenges and align with the four IKI priority areas: greenhouse gas mitigation, climate adaptation, carbon sink conservation, and biodiversity protection.

How to Apply?

Applications for International Calls follow an annual selection process. Interested organisations must prepare and submit proposals aligned with the programme’s objectives and eligibility criteria.
