The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, in partnership with the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), supports biotechnology innovation across academia, industry, and startups in India. DBT’s mission focuses on enhancing the country’s biotechnology potential by promoting science-driven solutions that meet societal and economic needs. The DBT-BIRAC Amrit Team Grants program is one of DBT’s initiatives that aligns with the Prime Minister’s call for “Jai Anusandhan” (Hail Research), encouraging collaborative efforts and interdisciplinary research to solve ambitious national challenges. The program strives to foster high-impact research, enabling India to strengthen its position in global biotechnology and develop transformative, knowledge-based solutions. BIRAC, a Public Sector Undertaking of DBT, further bridges academia and industry, providing grants and incubation support to accelerate the growth of the Indian biotech ecosystem.
About the Grant
The DBT-BIRAC Amrit Team Grants, initiated by India’s Department of Biotechnology and BIRAC, aim to propel innovation and impactful research in the biotechnology sector. The program prioritizes collaborative, high-risk, milestone-driven research across areas such as healthcare, agriculture, plant and animal biotechnology, and biomanufacturing. Eligible projects can receive substantial government grants, with academic initiatives funded up to ₹10 crore and startup support up to ₹50 lakh, empowering interdisciplinary solutions that address national needs.
Who can Apply?
Public and private educational and research institutions, startups, and NGOs registered in India are eligible to apply, provided they have at least three years of experience in socioeconomic or scientific research. Each proposal must involve at least three host organizations or departments within the same large institution, with a clear plan for interdisciplinary research and societal impact. The lead applicant must submit approvals from each organization’s competent authority, and projects must be achievable within a maximum five-year period. Women scientists, early- to mid-career researchers, and teams with start-up collaborations are encouraged. Each proposal must have a designated Principal Investigator (PI) or coordinator and cannot involve more than 40% funding to any single organization.

Submit your application via the DBT e-PROMIS portal for academia collaborations or the BIRAC portal for academia-startup collaborations. Ensure all documentation and approvals are attached.
