About Organisation
Grand Challenges Canada is an innovation funding organisation that supports bold ideas with the potential to generate significant social impact. Working with governments, philanthropic organisations and development partners, it invests in innovations that address critical health and development challenges.
AVPN is a regional social-investment network that brings together funders, investors, social organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen the social-impact ecosystem across Asia. Together, Grand Challenges Canada and AVPN are leading Nexa Lighthouse, an initiative that brings climate and health innovation funding to communities across Asia and the Pacific.
About the Grant
Nexa Lighthouse – Climate × Health Innovation is a funding opportunity designed to help proven innovations expand their reach and strengthen health-system resilience against climate-related health threats. The programme focuses on solutions that help local health actors anticipate, prepare for and respond to three major risk areas: changing mosquito patterns that contribute to diseases such as malaria and dengue; extreme heat and its effects on human health; and poor air quality.
The call supports two broad categories of innovation. The first is climate-informed early-warning and monitoring systems that combine climate, environmental and health information to help communities and health services anticipate risks and take timely action. The second is climate-responsive patient-care delivery, including approaches that strengthen diagnosis, treatment and continuity of care for people affected by climate-related health risks.
This is a Transition to Scale opportunity. It is intended for innovations that have already been tested and demonstrated evidence of effectiveness and are ready for wider implementation. It is not intended to fund an untested concept or an early-stage pilot without sufficient proof of concept.
Selected innovations may receive approximately US$250,000 to US$2 million, depending on their maturity and the funding partner. Most investments are expected to be provided through grants, although debt or equity instruments may also be considered depending on the applicant’s organisational structure and sustainability plan.
Who can Apply?
The opportunity is open to legally incorporated organisations or equivalent entities, including NGOs, non-profit organisations, social enterprises, companies, research institutions, academic institutions and government organisations.
Applicants can be incorporated in any country but must implement their proposed innovation in an eligible country in Asia and the Pacific. India is among the priority implementation countries.
Applicants must demonstrate that their innovation has sufficient evidence of effectiveness and is ready to expand beyond its existing implementation stage. Proposed solutions must directly address climate-related health risks associated with mosquito-borne infections, extreme heat or poor air quality. Organisations should also demonstrate their ability to work with local health actors and contribute to stronger, more resilient health systems
How to Apply?
Applicants should review the official Nexa Lighthouse Funding Opportunity document and the accompanying application guidance before beginning the process. Proposals must be submitted through Grand Challenges Canada’s Fluxx online application portal. Applications submitted through other channels will not be accepted.
Applicants should explain the innovation’s evidence base, implementation readiness, target population, climate-health relevance, scalability and expected outcomes. The proposal must also demonstrate how the innovation will help health actors respond to climate-related risks in the selected implementation country.
