About Organisation
The Pulitzer Center is a nonprofit journalism organization founded in 2006 that supports innovative and consequential reporting on important issues around the world. Its network includes journalists and educators working across more than 80 countries. The Center focuses on journalism that can deepen public understanding and encourage meaningful civic engagement. Climate and environmental issues have been central to its work, including reporting on rainforests, oceans, climate change and labor. In addition to journalism grants and fellowships, the Pulitzer Center supports initiatives that connect reporting with communities and civic actors. Through these efforts, the organization seeks to strengthen informed dialogue, amplify diverse perspectives and encourage action.
About the Grant
The Global South Civil Society Microgrants support grassroots organizations, community-led movements, civil society groups, artists and civic coalitions that use Pulitzer Center-supported journalism to strengthen community awareness and civic engagement around climate and environmental issues. Grants of USD $2,000 to $4,000 can support existing activities or launch new projects. The 2026 cycle focuses on three themes: rainforest, ocean, and climate and labor. Projects may involve community engagement, creative expression, public dialogues, knowledge sharing, campaigns and other innovative activities. Proposed projects should use at least one published Pulitzer Center-supported story as a meaningful component of their civic engagement work.
Who can Apply?
The opportunity is open to grassroots organizations, community educators, civil society organizations and coalitions, youth movements, and other groups working at the intersection of journalism, civic rights and active citizenship in the Global South. Applicants should have previous experience developing and implementing civic engagement activities, particularly in Africa, Latin America or Southeast Asia. Organizations should demonstrate experience working on the relevant climate or environmental issues and have the capacity to collaborate with communities and partners. Applicants must also have the operational capacity to manage microgrant resources from an international organization and demonstrate a track record of co-creating impactful projects with communities or organizations.
How to Apply?
Develop a civic engagement project connected to rainforest, ocean, or climate-and-labor issues and use at least one Pulitzer Center-supported story as part of the project. Prepare a project description of no more than 400 words, target audience and impact, methodology, timeline and budget. Include community consent where required and the lead applicant’s CV and recommendation letter. Submit the application online in English before the deadline.
