Water Witness International is a global organization working to improve water security, water governance and climate resilience while promoting fairness and accountability in water management. The organization works with communities, civil society groups, researchers, journalists and other partners to address challenges involving water insecurity, pollution, droughts, floods, water conflicts and weak governance. Through research, advocacy, technical support and capacity development, Water Witness seeks to strengthen accountability among governments, corporations and other duty bearers. Its Fair Water Action Fund extends this work by providing financial, technical, legal and strategic support to organizations and individuals in the Global South working toward equitable and sustainable water systems.
About the Grant
The Fair Water Action Fund provides grants ranging from £3,000 to £36,000 per project, alongside technical, legal and strategic support, to initiatives advancing water justice in the Global South. The fund supports work focused on water security, accountability, governance and systemic change. Eligible initiatives may involve accountability monitoring, citizen voice amplification, research, investigative journalism and evidence-based advocacy. Priority is given to countries facing physical and economic water scarcity and projects addressing the interconnected challenges of water, climate, nature and social inequality. The fund particularly encourages initiatives addressing the water impacts of multinational corporations, global supply chains and government performance in delivering water security.
Who can Apply?
The Fair Water Action Fund is open to applicants working in the Global South, particularly in countries experiencing physical and economic water scarcity. Eligible applicants may include civil society organizations, media organizations, coalitions and networks, investigative journalists, individual researchers and research institutions. Applicants should demonstrate a clear connection between their proposed work and water justice, water security, accountability or systemic change. Strong applications should address practical water challenges and show how the proposed work can contribute to improved governance, equitable access to water, stronger accountability or policy change. Initiatives may address water, sanitation, drought, floods, pollution, water conflicts, climate impacts or related governance challenges.
How to Apply?
Review the Fair Water Action Fund eligibility criteria and application guidance before preparing your proposal. Clearly identify the water-security or water-governance problem you want to address and explain its impact on communities or ecosystems. Describe your proposed research, accountability, advocacy or community initiative and explain how it can contribute to systemic change.
