Adaptation Fund

Grant Amount: Funded

About Organisation

The Adaptation Fund is an international climate finance mechanism established to support developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. It finances concrete adaptation projects and programmes that build climate resilience at local, national, and regional levels. Since 2010, the Fund has committed over USD 1.39 billion to support adaptation efforts benefiting millions of people worldwide. A key innovation of the Adaptation Fund is its Direct Access modality, which empowers accredited national institutions to directly access and manage climate finance aligned with country priorities.

About the Grant

The Adaptation Fund provides financial support for climate change adaptation projects and programmes across a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, water management, disaster risk reduction, food security, ecosystems, and urban and rural development. Funded initiatives are country-driven and designed to help vulnerable communities adapt to climate-related risks. The Fund supports full projects, programmes, readiness grants, and small grants for innovation, learning, and project scale-up. Proposals are reviewed based on technical, environmental, social, and institutional criteria approved by the Adaptation Fund Board.

Who can Apply?

Funding applications must be submitted by accredited institutions rather than individuals. Eligible applicants include National Implementing Entities, Regional Implementing Entities, and Multilateral Implementing Entities accredited by the Adaptation Fund. National Implementing Entities can access funding directly under the Direct Access modality. Projects must align with national adaptation priorities of developing countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol. Only accredited entities are eligible to submit concept notes or full project proposals for funding consideration by the Adaptation Fund Board.

How to Apply?

Accredited implementing entities may submit concept notes or full project proposals on behalf of eligible countries. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and must follow the Adaptation Fund’s Operational Policies and Guidelines. Proposals are reviewed by the technical bodies of the Fund and, once recommended, are included in the agenda of the next Adaptation Fund Board meeting.

Application Deadline

For this call, applications are open until 31 January 2026; however, accredited entities may continue submitting proposals on a rolling basis beyond this date.
