About Organisation
The United Nations University (UNU) is dedicated to addressing global challenges related to human survival, development, and welfare through research and education. Established in 2007 in Bonn, Germany, the UNU Vice-Rectorate in Europe (UNU-VIE) supports collaboration across UNU institutes and the broader UN system, particularly with agencies based in Bonn. It strengthens institutional partnerships, facilitates policy-relevant research, and promotes sustainable development through global cooperation. UNU-VIE also works to advance international understanding by sharing knowledge and expertise across sectors, fostering multidisciplinary solutions for a more sustainable and equitable future. As one of the 13 UNU institutes, it plays a pivotal role in promoting cooperation between research, policy, and practice on a global scale, enhancing the visibility and impact of the United Nations University’s work throughout Europe and beyond.
About the Grant
The UNFCCC–UNU Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme provides a unique opportunity for young professionals from developing countries to begin their careers at the intersection of climate policy, research, and global governance. Fellows engage in hands-on work with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and UNU, contributing to critical discussions and research on climate solutions. Fellowships range from 12 to 24 months, offering participants the chance to gain experience in climate diplomacy, policy analysis, and scientific collaboration. Upon completion, fellows are well-equipped to contribute effectively to climate action in their home countries or on international platforms. The programme particularly encourages applications from academically exceptional young graduates and women from least developed countries, emphasizing diversity and inclusion in global climate leadership.
Who can Apply?
Applicants must be nationals of developing countries, with preference given to women from least developed countries. Candidates should have recently completed or be in the final semester of an advanced degree (Master’s, doctorate, or equivalent) in fields related to climate change, environment, communications, or international relations. They must demonstrate strong academic performance, such as scholarships or honors, and have a solid understanding of sustainability and climate policy. While prior professional experience is not mandatory, applicants with up to two years of relevant experience may also be considered. Candidates holding only a bachelor’s degree or not enrolled in a graduate program are not eligible. The fellowship seeks young professionals with a commitment to global climate action, analytical skills, and a readiness to contribute to the objectives of UNU and UNFCCC.
