About Organisation

The World Bank is an international financial institution that operates as a cooperative owned by 189 member countries. Each member nation, also referred to as a shareholder, is represented by a Board of Governors, which serves as the highest decision-making authority. Typically, these governors are ministers of finance or ministers of development from their respective countries. They convene annually during the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings, where strategic global economic and development priorities are discussed.

The World Bank’s mission revolves around reducing poverty, advancing sustainable development, and strengthening institutions worldwide. It provides countries with financial resources, knowledge, and policy advice to drive economic growth and improve governance. The institution also plays a key role in fostering partnerships between governments, experts, and development organizations to deliver impactful reforms. With its global reach and technical expertise, the World Bank has become a central platform for advancing evidence-based policymaking and addressing pressing global challenges. By leveraging data, research, and collaboration, the organization supports innovative programs that transform public systems, improve efficiency, and empower governments to achieve long-term social and economic progress.

About the Grant

The World Bank Government Analytics Fellowship Program is a unique initiative aimed at enhancing the ability of governments to harness data for better policymaking and administration. Recognizing that governments hold vast amounts of underutilized data, the program focuses on equipping officials with the skills and knowledge to translate this information into evidence-based decisions.

The fellowship is designed to combine academic rigor with practical insights. Drawing on the World Bank’s Government Analytics Handbook, as well as expertise from leading academics and practitioners, the program helps participants design and implement projects that improve public sector efficiency. It is a collaborative initiative led by the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice-Presidency, the Development Impact Group, the Institutions Global Department, the Institute for Economic Development, and University College London (UCL).

Over a six-month duration, the fellowship blends in-person learning with in-service mentoring. Fellows participate in intensive training sessions in Washington, D.C., which include the Government Analytics course and the Public Institutions Conference. They also receive continued guidance from senior experts to apply their learnings to real-world government projects. By empowering officials with analytical expertise, the fellowship seeks to catalyze systemic changes in governance and foster a global network of professionals committed to effective public administration.
