About Organisation

Mulago is a private foundation created to carry forward the life’s work of pediatrician Rainer Arnhold. Rainer was driven by a belief that children living in poverty deserve far better lives; Mulago’s mission reflects that focus on solutions that meet the basic needs of the poorest families. After Rainer’s sudden death in 1993, his brother Henry Arnhold re‑shaped the foundation into its current, impact-obsessed form. Mulago backs organizations that can deliver lasting change at scale: it provides flexible, unrestricted funding to teams with scalable solutions and a proven ability to execute. The portfolio spans both start-ups and more mature organizations, and Mulago is deliberately structure-agnostic — nonprofit or for‑profit doesn’t matter, only the path to impact does. With a big mandate and a tiny staff, Mulago does not accept unsolicited proposals; instead, it sources through a deep network to efficiently find the best fits for its very specific criteria. Its fellows programs are designed to help social entrepreneurs design for impact, craft strategies for scale, and join a community committed to measurable, durable outcomes.

About the Grant

The Henry Arnhold Fellowship identifies conservation and climate leaders with solutions that work and can grow fast — then helps them design and deliver those solutions at scale. Each year, Mulago selects 8–10 fellows and supports them to: (1) sharpen high-impact, scalable designs and strategies for bigger, faster, better outcomes; (2) build the organizations capable of executing at scale; and (3) plug into a growing peer community at the forefront of conservation and climate. The fellowship is anchored by two intensive, week‑long workshops that bookend the year, creating rare, focused time to interrogate ideas and apply practical frameworks. Fellows receive an upfront, unrestricted $100,000 grant, year‑long coaching on Mulago’s design/strategy frameworks, and consideration for longer-term Mulago funding. Solutions span protecting nature and ecosystems (forests, rivers, oceans, mountains, grasslands), slowing climate change (cutting emissions, boosting efficiency, capturing carbon), and adapting to a rapidly changing climate — from tropical forests in the Amazon Basin to African grasslands and Indian Ocean fisheries.

Who can Apply?

Mulago is looking for founders/CEOs (or equivalent most-senior leaders) who are full time on an organization — nonprofit or for‑profit — that is already up and running, even if very early. Your solution must tackle a big conservation or climate problem and show a credible path to exponential, scalable impact: it should be replicable, financeable at large scale, and capable of delivering lasting change. You should be impact-obsessed, focused on protecting ecosystems, cutting emissions, using energy efficiently, capturing carbon, or enabling communities and systems to adapt to the new climate reality. Evidence that the solution works (or strong early proof it can) and a strategy to take it big are essential. Mulago prioritizes leaders who can articulate a clear theory of change, measure the right outcomes, and make disciplined choices about what to scale — and what not to. If you fit this profile and are ready to rigorously design for impact and strategy for scale, this fellowship is for you.

How to Apply?

There are two paths: (1) Recommend a Fellow via a short form; Mulago reads every recommendation and links it to any later application. (2) Apply directly as a leader; the brief application (about 1–2 hours) is designed to quickly reveal the idea and its scaling path. Select candidates will be invited forward. No unsolicited proposals outside these routes.
