About Organisation
Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) is a not-for-profit public institution dedicated to fostering research-based engagement among young adults. It operates at the intersection of natural and social sciences, arts, and engineering, creating a dynamic platform where diverse disciplines converge. With the support of the Government of Karnataka and key academic partners like the Indian Institute of Science, National Centre for Biological Sciences, and Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, SGB is part of the Global Science Gallery Network, which includes sister galleries in cities such as London, Dublin, and Melbourne. Through exhibitions, public labs, and mentorship programs, SGB emphasizes critical inquiry and creativity.
Shared Ecologies, a programme supported by the Shyama Foundation, partners with SGB for this grant. It encourages artistic, scientific, and ecological collaborations that critically examine environmental and biodiversity concerns. The initiative supports transdisciplinary approaches that span creative practices, academic knowledge, and ecological stewardship. By engaging regional and international networks of artists, scientists, and institutions, Shared Ecologies strives to nurture new ways of thinking and responding to ecological challenges. Together, SGB and Shared Ecologies offer platforms that stimulate dialogue, exploration, and transformative ideas about the world’s interdependent ecosystems and the urgent environmental questions of our time.
About the Grant
The Entangled Ecosystems Grant is a unique opportunity for Indian artists or collectives to develop a new exhibit that explores the deep interconnections within ecosystems, particularly in the context of forests, fungi, and climate change. Hosted by Science Gallery Bengaluru in partnership with Shared Ecologies and supported by the Shyama Foundation, this initiative encourages artistic engagement with scientific research and ecological fieldwork. The grant aims to support projects that are immersive, participatory, and process-driven, offering new perspectives on environmental transformation.
Artists will collaborate with ecologist Dr. Meghna Krishnadas and gain access to a wide range of research materials including plant tissue samples, fungal cultures, canopy scans, temperature and humidity data, observational field notes, and digital visualizations. The final exhibit can take various forms, including but not limited to installations, videos, performances, web-based work, or sound-based pieces. The emphasis is on artworks that critically engage with ecological knowledge production and invite audiences to reconsider how ecosystems are understood and experienced. The selected project will be developed between July 2025 and February 2026, culminating in a public showcase in March 2026. This grant offers a chance to deeply engage with environmental data and ecological themes through innovative artistic expression.
Who can Apply?
The Entangled Ecosystems Grant is open to individual artists or collectives holding Indian nationality. Applicants from diverse disciplines are encouraged to apply, including those working in visual arts, sound, performance, digital media, design, craft, poetry, socially engaged practices, and transdisciplinary forms that intersect with science, ecology, and research. The grant does not restrict format, making it ideal for artists who wish to experiment with new approaches or combine physical and digital elements.
Eligible proposals must demonstrate a strong conceptual alignment with the grant’s ecological themes and showcase a commitment to process-oriented, participatory, and immersive methods. A genuine interest in collaborating with scientists and engaging with research materials—such as field notes, climate data, images, models, or living specimens—is essential. Previous experience in ecology-related work is not mandatory, but applicants should be eager to explore knowledge production across disciplines. Collectives must designate one primary contact person. Proposals that critically investigate environmental disruption, ecosystem relationships, and climate change—while offering innovative modes of audience engagement—will be prioritized. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted during June–July 2025 for clarification. Final selections will be based on the project’s relevance, feasibility, and potential for interdisciplinary collaboration and public engagement.

Applicants should ensure their idea aligns with Science Gallery Bengaluru’s ethos and explore the archive of past exhibitions for inspiration.
