About the Grant
The 2025 Research & Development Grant by Chicken & Egg Films supports filmmakers in the early stages of their feature-length documentary projects. This grant, initiated in 2023 with Netflix’s support, addresses the challenge of funding initial research and development phases, often unsupported in the industry. Grants of $10,000 for research and $20,000 for development are available, fostering innovative, socially transformative projects. Priority is given to stories uplifting underrepresented voices and challenging conventional narratives through diverse artistic approaches, from experimental to archival filmmaking.
Who can Apply?
Filmmakers must identify as women or gender-expansive, have directed at least one feature-length documentary, and reside globally (except in sanctioned countries). Eligible projects must be independently produced, feature-length (48+ minutes), and in the research or development stage. Student films or works-for-hire are ineligible. Awardees must secure a U.S. fiscal sponsor or be a 501(c)(3) to receive funding. Filmmakers can apply for either the Research or Development Grant but not both within the same cycle.

Applicants must complete a mandatory pre-application and follow guidelines specific to the grant type. The application process is aligned with the Nonfiction Core Application 2.0, with additional questions for the Development Grant.
