About Organisation
The Japan Foundation is a nonprofit organization established to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Through its diverse programs, the Foundation fosters global appreciation for Japanese culture, arts, and language. By supporting initiatives that bridge cultural gaps, the Japan Foundation plays a pivotal role in strengthening international relationships and enhancing global awareness of Japan’s rich heritage.
About the Grant
The Japan Foundation’s Support Program for Translation and Publication offers financial assistance to overseas publishers aiming to translate and publish works originally written in Japanese. The program seeks to enhance global understanding of Japanese culture by encouraging the dissemination of Japanese literature and scholarly works. Eligible projects include translations of both fiction and nonfiction works in the humanities and social sciences. The grant covers part of the translation and publication costs, such as paper, typesetting, platemaking, printing, and binding. Applicants may apply for support for translation costs only, provided that the translated edition is published within two years of completion. The program aims to make Japanese works more accessible to international audiences, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation of Japan’s literary and intellectual contributions.
Who can Apply?
Overseas publishing companies are eligible to apply for the Support Program for Translation and Publication. Applicants must be publishers based outside of Japan. The program supports translation and publication projects of works written in Japanese and already published in Japan. Eligible works include both fiction and nonfiction in the humanities and social sciences. The translated work must be published between April 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027. However, applicants may apply for support for translation costs only, provided that the translated edition is published within two years of completion. The original work must be published at the time of application. Translations should be made directly from the original Japanese works. In cases where the translator pool is limited, approval may be given for support for translation from a previously translated edition. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to producing high-quality translations and publications that contribute to a broader understanding of Japanese culture.
How to Apply?
Interested publishers should submit their applications through the Japan Foundation’s designated platform. The application process involves providing detailed information about the proposed project, including the original work’s details, the translation plan, and the publication schedule. Applicants must also include a draft translation equivalent to approximately 30 pages of the original work. All applications should adhere to the guidelines specified by the Japan Foundation.
Application Deadline
The application deadline for the Support Program for Translation and Publication is December 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM Japan Standard Time. Late submissions will not be considered.
