About Organisation

The First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) is dedicated to strengthening and revitalizing the Indigenous languages, arts, and cultural heritage of First Nations communities in British Columbia. Founded to uphold cultural continuity and self-determination, FPCC works directly with Indigenous communities, knowledge keepers, and educators to preserve linguistic diversity and cultural identity. The organization recognizes that each First Nation holds unique traditions, dialects, and histories that shape its language and culture. Through strategic funding, capacity-building programs, and knowledge exchange, FPCC empowers communities to design initiatives that reflect their distinct needs and priorities. FPCC’s approach ensures that revitalization efforts are community-led and sustainable, rooted in ancestral knowledge and intergenerational learning. The council continues to be a cornerstone institution supporting cultural resurgence, digital preservation, and the long-term vitality of Indigenous heritage across the province.

About the Grant

The Language Vitality Program is designed to support the revitalization and sustainability of First Nations languages throughout British Columbia. Recognizing the unique journey of each community, the program allows applicants to design initiatives aligned with their language stage and cultural goals. It offers four funding categories—Rise, Roots, Grow, and Flourish—symbolizing progressive stages of linguistic renewal. Funding ranges from $50,000 to $300,000, depending on the category. The Rise stream assists emerging groups beginning their revitalization efforts; Roots supports intermediate teams deepening existing work; Grow helps communities implementing structured, strategic language plans; and Flourish funds advanced, long-term programs promoting intergenerational fluency. Projects may include developing language curricula, training teachers, documenting endangered dialects, or expanding immersion programs. The program’s flexible framework ensures that support reaches communities at various development levels, enabling both grassroots initiatives and large-scale revitalization projects to thrive.

Who can Apply?

Eligibility for the Language Vitality Program includes a wide range of First Nations–led organisations in British Columbia. Recognized First Nations governments, bands, and tribal councils may apply, along with registered not-for-profit societies, urban and off-reserve First Nations organisations, First Nations–led museums and cultural spaces, and educational institutions located on First Nations lands. All applicants must ensure their governing body or board of directors includes at least 65% of members who are either First Nations citizens or have ancestral ties to recognized B.C. First Nations. The program encourages community-based governance, ensuring that projects reflect genuine local leadership and priorities. Applicants should demonstrate clear objectives, community collaboration, and strategies for capacity building and sustainability. Proposed initiatives should directly support language preservation, documentation, education, or community engagement that enhances intergenerational transmission. Whether applicants are new to revitalization efforts or experienced leaders in cultural preservation, the program welcomes proposals that align with its mission to protect and strengthen the linguistic heritage of First Nations communities.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit a proposal through the FPCC application portal, detailing project goals, timelines, and budget plans. Applications should align with one of the four funding categories—Rise, Roots, Grow, or Flourish—and demonstrate community involvement and governance compliance. Supporting documents verifying organizational eligibility and leadership composition are required.

Application Deadline

Applications for the Language Vitality Grant Program close on 12 December 2025. Late submissions or incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.
