About Organisation

Stiftung Artenschutz, founded in 2018, is a collaborative initiative involving zoological gardens, wildlife parks, and conservation organizations. It works closely with the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ) in Berlin to advance the cause of global nature and species conservation. A core part of their mission is to support both in-situ (within natural habitats) and ex-situ (outside natural habitats) conservation efforts. Zoological gardens bring unique value to conservation by offering specialized knowledge in species husbandry, breeding, and reintroduction programs under the internationally endorsed “One Plan Approach.”

Stiftung Artenschutz places a particular emphasis on the protection of endangered animal species that receive little public or institutional support despite facing imminent extinction. Its focus lies in habitat preservation, capacity building, awareness generation, and conservation action on the ground. The organization adheres to international guidelines set by the IUCN and its Species Survival Commission, ensuring scientifically sound conservation strategies. By leveraging partnerships, expertise, and trust-based fund management, Stiftung Artenschutz continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding global biodiversity, particularly focusing on lesser-known and critically threatened species.

About the Grant

The Amphibian Conservation Fund is a dedicated initiative aimed at addressing the drastic global decline in amphibian populations. Managed by Stiftung Artenschutz, this fund is supported by zoo associations and private conservation entities from German-speaking regions. Its purpose is to facilitate both direct and indirect conservation efforts for amphibian species classified under the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable. Projects concerning Data Deficient or Not Evaluated species may also be considered if they include surveys to clarify their conservation status or demonstrate a valid reason for concern.

The fund supports a broad spectrum of activities such as field-based research, species reintroductions, habitat restoration, conservation breeding programs, capacity building, training, and public education initiatives. Emphasizing measurable impact, the grant prioritizes projects that can clearly show a positive effect on the status of threatened amphibian populations.

The Amphibian Conservation Fund is governed under the guidance of internationally recognized frameworks and aligns its strategies with IUCN’s best practices. Stiftung Artenschutz administers the fund in close consultation with its partners, ensuring that supported initiatives contribute meaningfully to the preservation and recovery of amphibian biodiversity worldwide.

Who can Apply?

The Amphibian Conservation Fund is open to individuals and organizations actively involved in amphibian conservation, research, education, or habitat restoration. Eligible applicants include but are not limited to zoological gardens, wildlife parks, conservation NGOs, universities, field researchers, and community-based conservation groups with proven experience in biodiversity conservation or amphibian-focused initiatives.

Applicants must propose projects that contribute significantly to the conservation status of threatened amphibian species. Priority is given to species classified as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable under the IUCN Red List. However, projects involving Data Deficient or Not Evaluated species will also be considered if the proposed work includes essential surveys or presents strong evidence for conservation concern.

Proposals must demonstrate scientific rigor, feasibility, and long-term conservation benefits. Collaborative efforts, especially those involving local communities or multiple stakeholders, are encouraged. All activities should comply with IUCN guidelines and ethical practices.

Applicants are required to present a clear work plan, measurable objectives, and realistic budgeting. Previous experience in species conservation, ecological monitoring, or educational outreach will strengthen an application. Funding will not be awarded for purely academic research without applied conservation value or for projects lacking measurable conservation impact.

How to Apply?

To apply, interested individuals or organizations must submit a detailed project proposal in accordance with the provided guidelines. The application must clearly outline conservation objectives, methodologies, species targeted, budget, and expected outcomes. All proposals must align with IUCN best practices and demonstrate tangible conservation benefits. The application process is open until the deadline and must be submitted in full by the specified date and time.

Application Deadline

Applications for the Amphibian Conservation Fund must be submitted by August 31, 2025, 23:59 CET (UTC+2). Late submissions will not be considered for funding.
