About the Grant

The “Building Resilience in Agriculture Initiative” by the National Geographic Society seeks proposals that apply innovative, science-based approaches to make farming systems and communities more resilient to the challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events. This grant is designed to support projects that implement feasible, nature-positive solutions within agricultural landscapes, focusing on regenerative practices that enhance soil health, biodiversity, watershed management, and livelihoods. Projects must involve a strong field or land component, directly applying solutions within farms, farming communities, or areas adjacent to cultivated land. Eligible crops include corn, wheat, oats, potatoes, rice, sugar beets, oilseeds, cocoa, oil palm, raisins, and soy. The initiative emphasizes locally relevant solutions that integrate cultural, social, and economic contexts alongside environmental outcomes, ensuring both feasibility and scalability. Successful applicants will also gain access to mentorship, capacity-building, and networking opportunities as part of the National Geographic Explorer community. Selected projects are expected to deliver measurable outcomes that strengthen agricultural resilience, promote climate-smart practices, and improve sustainability in farming landscapes worldwide.

Who can Apply?

This opportunity is open to individuals aged 18 and above with significant experience leading solutions-oriented, regenerative agricultural projects. The grant is awarded as a Level II grant, best suited for project leaders capable of demonstrating tangible, field-based impacts. Applicants may or may not have previously received funding from the National Geographic Society, as both newcomers and past Explorers are encouraged to apply. Eligible projects must directly engage farmers, be co-created with farming communities, and demonstrate measurable outcomes in areas such as soil health, climate adaptation, biodiversity, watershed health, and livelihood improvement. However, certain types of projects will not be considered. Ineligible proposals include those focused solely on non-food crops (such as fiber production), livestock or animal farming practices, basic research without applied outcomes, or projects that require land conversion. Additionally, proposals must not exceed the budget limit of $150,000 unless supplementary funding is secured. Projects must be completed within two years of funding and must align with the initiative’s mission of fostering regenerative, climate-smart agricultural practices in existing cultivated landscapes

How to Apply?

Interested applicants must prepare and submit a detailed proposal outlining their project’s goals, methodology, expected outcomes, budget, and feasibility. Proposals should highlight innovative, science-driven approaches that address local challenges in agriculture while fostering resilience and sustainability.
