Its vision is to position India as the largest global provider of quality medicines at reasonable prices. The mission focuses on promoting “Pharma Brand India,” encouraging eco-friendly industry growth, and making quality drugs accessible nationwide. The Department also aims to elevate the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) into globally recognized centres of excellence for education and pharmaceutical research. Through its initiatives, it continues to bridge academia and industry to ensure innovation-driven growth and contribute to public health advancement.

About the Grant

The Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech (PRIP) Scheme is an initiative by the Department of Pharmaceuticals to strengthen India’s R&D ecosystem and foster innovation in pharmaceuticals and medical technology. With a total financial outlay of ₹5,000 crores, the scheme aims to transform India’s pharma sector from cost-driven to innovation-led growth.

Of this, ₹700 crores are allocated for establishing Centers of Excellence (CoEs) across seven NIPERs, while ₹4,200 crores will support industry-academia collaboration, technology development, and commercialization of new products. The PRIP scheme focuses on early- and later-stage research projects targeting new medicines, biologics, complex generics, biosimilars, and novel medical devices.

The grant supports innovations in areas like AI-based diagnostics, genetic screening tools, robotic surgery devices, vaccines, and neglected tropical diseases. By promoting strategic research and encouraging startups and MSMEs to partner with academic institutions, PRIP seeks to boost India’s global competitiveness in pharmaceuticals and MedTech innovation while creating high-quality employment opportunities.

Who can Apply?

The PRIP Scheme invites applications from startups, MSMEs, and industry-academia collaborations involved in pharmaceutical and MedTech research. Applicants must be legally registered entities based in India with a proven R&D focus and capacity to advance technologies through higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).

  • Early Stage Projects – Open to startups and MSMEs with technologies at TRL 1–3, aiming to progress up to TRL 5. Projects up to ₹1 crore are fully funded, while those above ₹1 crore up to ₹5 crores receive 50% financial assistance.

  • Later Stage Projects – For technologies at TRL 4–6, seeking to reach higher readiness levels. Funding covers up to 35% of project costs, or 50% for strategic innovations, with assistance up to ₹100 crores.

Priority is given to projects targeting new medicines, biosimilars, complex generics, vaccines, novel medical devices, and diseases of public health importance such as neglected tropical diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Proposals involving strong academic partnerships and technology transfer are highly encouraged.
