By equipping professionals with the necessary skills and exposure, ODI Global continues to drive sustainable policy reforms and inclusive development worldwide.
About the Grant
The ODI Fellowship Scheme is a prestigious initiative designed to provide early-career economists and statisticians with the opportunity to work as public sector civil servants on two-year contracts in low- and middle-income countries. Since its establishment in 1963, the program has placed over 1,300 fellows in various government ministries, central banks, regulatory bodies, and statistical offices across more than 50 countries.
This fellowship is demand-driven, meaning placements are determined by the needs of partner governments. Fellows work directly within public sector institutions, contributing their expertise in economic and statistical analysis to inform policy decisions and development strategies. The scheme offers a unique chance for professional growth, exposure to global policy-making, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on economic and social development.
The fellowship provides a competitive compensation package, including a net salary of approximately £32,600 in the first year and £34,600 in the second year, which includes a housing allowance that varies based on the cost of living in the host country. The experience gained through this program equips fellows with the skills needed for careers in international development, policy research, and public administration.
Who can Apply?
The ODI Fellowship Scheme is open to candidates of all nationalities with a postgraduate degree (master’s or PhD) in economics, statistics, or a related discipline. Suitable specialized qualifications include, but are not limited to, development economics, agricultural economics, health economics, international economics, environmental economics, and econometrics. Candidates currently completing their postgraduate studies may apply, with selection contingent upon successful degree completion.

They should possess analytical skills, problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to non-specialists.
Personal attributes such as resilience, adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and political acumen are essential. Candidates should also exhibit strong management and work-related skills, including project management, report writing, and the ability to work independently in resource-constrained environments.
