About the Grant

This grant aims to support validation research for novel therapeutic targets associated with early intervention in anxiety, depression, and psychosis. The initiative is designed in collaboration with the Psychiatry Consortium to facilitate rigorous early-stage target validation. It funds studies that generate data demonstrating a target’s potential for drug development while also ensuring non-viable targets are identified early. Eligible targets include receptors, proteins, enzymes, biomolecules, and gut microbiomes. Research activities must show that modulating a target impacts pathophysiological processes and could lead to clinical benefits. Projects must outline target novelty, biological rationale, patient impact, feasibility, and expertise of the research team. The ultimate goal is to support the development of effective pharmacological treatments for mental health disorders.

Who can Apply?

Researchers from disciplines relevant to drug discovery and mental health science, such as neuroscience, molecular biology, genomics, neuropharmacology, and computational psychiatry, are eligible to apply. Applicants must be affiliated with an eligible institution, including higher education institutions, research institutes, non-academic healthcare organizations, and non-profit research organizations. The grant is open to researchers worldwide, except those based in mainland China. Teams should be diverse and interdisciplinary, incorporating expertise from multiple fields and institutions. Early-career researchers are encouraged to apply. While commercial organizations cannot apply as administering institutions or co-applicants, they can participate as consultants or collaborators. The administering organization must comply with Wellcome’s grant conditions and will manage the finances if the grant is awarded.
