About Organisation

Klarna, a global payments and shopping service, has expanded its mission beyond finance to include impactful initiatives that address critical global challenges. As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility, Klarna has launched the AI for Climate Resilience Program in collaboration with its philanthropic platform, Milkywire. This initiative is part of Klarna’s growing portfolio of support for innovative, community-centered projects that harness technology for public good.

Klarna believes in fostering climate resilience by supporting underserved regions disproportionately affected by climate change. Through strategic partnerships and funding, it aims to empower local communities with the tools and knowledge necessary to adapt effectively. Klarna’s philanthropic programs focus on long-term, sustainable solutions rather than short-term interventions, encouraging practical, scalable, and ethically designed innovations.

With a strong emphasis on responsible AI use, Klarna’s climate initiative supports projects that organize and apply local knowledge, develop real-world AI tools, and promote inclusive community participation. The organization values transparency, equity, and impact in all funded efforts and prioritizes outcomes that benefit climate-vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries. By providing funding, mentorship, and training, Klarna helps bridge the gap between technology and meaningful, community-driven climate adaptation.

About the Grant

The AI for Climate Resilience Program is a new initiative by Klarna designed to support projects using artificial intelligence to build climate resilience in underserved and climate-vulnerable communities. Grants of up to $300,000 are available for initiatives focused on real-world applications that help local populations better withstand the impacts of climate change.

Projects under this program may address a range of adaptation challenges such as improving food security, enhancing healthcare systems, and boosting coastal resilience. Emphasis is placed on practical tools, such as AI-driven apps for farmers or decision-making support systems for frontline health workers, that offer tangible community benefits. In addition to financial support, selected projects will receive mentorship, access to training resources, and the opportunity to engage with a collaborative community of innovators.

The program encourages open sharing of datasets, methodologies, and learnings to strengthen the broader climate resilience ecosystem. However, it does not fund short-term emergency aid, conceptual-only research, greenhouse gas-reduction-only efforts, or projects that lack clear community benefit or responsible AI governance frameworks.

Proposals should demonstrate a strong alignment with climate adaptation goals, ensure ethical use of AI, and provide measurable outcomes. For-profit organizations must clearly show equitable and community-first impact in their proposals.

Who can Apply?

The AI for Climate Resilience Program welcomes applications from organizations and innovators focused on climate adaptation through responsible AI. Eligible applicants must target specific climate challenges affecting low- and middle-income countries, with a commitment to long-term community resilience and public benefit.

Proposals must:

  • Tackle a real-world climate adaptation challenge (e.g., food security, healthcare, coastal resilience).

  • Use artificial intelligence responsibly, with clear governance and ethical safeguards.

  • Be community-centered, ensuring local participation and inclusion.

  • Show readiness for implementation or potential for scale, rather than being purely research-based.

  • Offer measurable outcomes that align with the program’s focus on resilience, not just emissions reduction.

Both nonprofit and for-profit organizations may apply. However, for-profit entities must provide strong evidence of equitable, community-focused outcomes, ensuring the technology serves vulnerable populations first. Projects should go beyond generic service offerings to address specific community needs and demonstrate clear impact pathways.

Applications from projects lacking tangible deployment potential, ethical AI practices, or climate adaptation relevance will not be considered. The program particularly encourages efforts that contribute to the ecosystem by openly sharing datasets, insights, and tools developed as part of the initiative.

How to Apply?

Interested applicants must prepare a proposal that clearly outlines their project’s alignment with the program’s goals, its intended climate adaptation impact, responsible AI usage, and public benefit. The proposal should include specific implementation plans, community engagement strategies, and expected outcomes. Submission must be completed before the deadline via the designated application platform provided by the program organizers.

Application Deadline

The last date to submit proposals for the AI for Climate Resilience Program is 31st August 2025. Ensure all documentation and required materials are submitted before the deadline.
