About the Grant
The Keeling Curve Prize honors the groundbreaking scientific work of Charles David Keeling, whose 1958 measurements at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory created a graph documenting the long-term upward trend of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, illustrating human activities’ significant impact on Earth’s atmosphere. This prize recognizes and supports innovative climate solutions aimed at bending the Keeling Curve downward by reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas concentrations.
The prize represents more than financial support—it jumpstarts growth for deserving climate leaders at the pace required to achieve meaningful planetary emissions reductions. Through a rigorous review process conducted by diverse climate experts, ten winners are selected annually from applicants representing over one hundred nine countries worldwide, with each winner receiving fifty thousand US dollars to scale and advance their initiatives.
The prize encompasses five categories: Carbon Sinks (carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration systems), Energy (zero-carbon energy innovations and equitable access), Finance (economic mechanisms for emissions reduction), Social and Cultural Pathways (influencing human behavior and climate action), and Transport and Mobility (reimagining vehicles, fuels, and transportation systems). Projects across these categories must demonstrate potential for significant climate impact, scalability, and contribution to global decarbonization efforts while promoting sustainability and addressing climate change challenges.
Who can Apply?
The Keeling Curve Prize welcomes applications from a remarkably broad range of innovators and climate solution leaders worldwide, making it uniquely inclusive among climate funding opportunities. Eligible applicants span diverse organizational types and innovation stages, from those elevating traditional proven solutions to pioneers exploring cutting-edge technological frontiers.
Entrepreneurs and startup founders developing climate solutions are encouraged to apply, as are university research groups conducting innovative climate-related investigations. Non-profit organizations and community leaders implementing grassroots climate initiatives qualify for consideration. Intrapreneurs working within large companies or established organizations who are advancing climate solutions from within their institutions are also eligible applicants.
The prize specifically seeks to activate and accelerate climate solutions from many different corners of the world and diverse voices, with particular emphasis on emerging markets, BIPOC-led organizations, women-led initiatives, and projects serving under-resourced and vulnerable communities globally. Applicants must demonstrate initiatives focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions or increasing uptake of heat-trapping gases through projects falling within one of five categories: Carbon Sinks, Energy, Finance, Social and Cultural Pathways, or Transport and Mobility.
Projects must show clear potential for climate impact, scalability, and contribution to bending the Keeling Curve downward. Applications are accepted from all countries worldwide, with submissions evaluated through a rigorous review process conducted by diverse climate experts.
