About Organisation
The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, is a central authority responsible for ensuring internal security and domestic policy coordination. It oversees a broad range of issues from public safety to civil defence and national disaster response. Committed to recognizing acts of bravery and public service, the Ministry organizes several award programs that honour citizens who display exceptional courage in life-threatening situations. Among these, the Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards stands out for its focus on valor and humanity. This initiative acknowledges individuals from all walks of life, including personnel from civil and armed forces, who risk their lives to save others. The Ministry ensures transparency and integrity in the selection process and collaborates with state governments, central departments, and disaster response forces to identify deserving candidates. These awards not only celebrate heroism but also foster a culture of selfless service across the country.
About the Grant
The Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards is instituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to honour individuals who have performed courageous and humane acts of saving lives. These acts may involve rescuing individuals from incidents such as drowning, fires, electrocution, road or rail accidents, natural calamities, or mine disasters. The awards come in three categories—Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and Jeevan Raksha Padak—each recognizing different levels of risk and bravery displayed by the rescuer. Recipients are awarded a medallion, a certificate signed by the Union Home Minister, and a lump-sum monetary reward. The awards may be presented by the State or Ministry the awardee belongs to. In addition to recognizing the bravery of civilians, the awards also acknowledge the extraordinary commitment of uniformed personnel to saving lives. The initiative aims to inspire citizens and promote a sense of community responsibility and selfless service.
