The Japan Foundation (JF) is Japan’s leading institution dedicated to promoting international cultural exchange and mutual understanding worldwide. Through grants, cultural programs, and academic support, JF fosters dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships across countries. The Foundation actively supports initiatives in arts, Japanese language education, and global intellectual exchange. About the Grant

The Japan-U.S. Global Partnership Grant Program supports policy-oriented research, dialogue, and exchange projects conducted collaboratively by Japanese and U.S. non-profit organizations. The initiative aims to resolve global issues of shared concern, strengthen bilateral relations, and foster multi-stakeholder partnerships across disciplines. Priority is given to projects that include diverse participants, expand beyond metropolitan hubs, and contribute to shaping policy or advancing global knowledge. Projects must begin between April 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027 and may run up to three years.

Who can Apply?

  • Applicants: U.S. non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status applying via the JF New York office.

  • Partners: Japanese non-profits, academic institutions, or practitioners.

  • Requirements:

    • Must include Japan-U.S. collaboration at the project’s core.

    • Each project must organize at least one symposium, conference, or workshop per year.

    • At least 20% of the total budget annually must come from non-JF sources.

  • Thematic Areas: Climate change, pandemics, disaster prevention, sustainable cities, AI, robotics, bioethics, cybersecurity, green tech, public health, demographic challenges, rural revitalization, and more. Projects outside these areas are also eligible if aligned with the program’s goals.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit a Project Narrative and a Detailed Budget using the JF template by December 1, 2025. The proposal should clearly outline objectives, rationale for Japan-U.S. collaboration, methodology, project design, and expected outcomes. Projects must demonstrate strong bilateral partnerships, policy relevance, and dissemination potential. Applications are reviewed on inclusivity, diversity of participants, and the potential for wide-reaching societal impact.

Applications must be submitted online by December 1, 2025, 11:59 p.m. EST. Early preparation is advised to meet all eligibility, documentation, and partnership requirements.
