About Organisation
IFRA-Nigeria is the French Institute for Research in Africa located within the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ibadan. The institute supports and promotes research on countries within its West African geographical mandate, with a particular focus on humanities and social sciences. Its work covers countries including Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Chad and Togo. IFRA-Nigeria supports researchers through grants, publications, partnerships and research activities. Its programmes encourage field-based and archival research and promote collaboration with institutions and researchers in the countries where research takes place. The institute also supports dissemination and publication of research findings.
About the Grant
The IFRA-Nigeria Research Grants 2027 support individual or collective research projects involving fieldwork missions and/or stays in archives. The grants cover research taking place between January and October 2027 within the institute’s nine-country West African geographical mandate. Around a dozen projects are expected to receive funding. Research must fall within humanities and social sciences and address at least one of IFRA-Nigeria’s research axes: beliefs, bodies and health; citizenship, gender and mobilisation; heritage dynamics and environment; or digital humanities. Applicants must also include a research valorisation component connected to publications, oral communications or other dissemination activities.
Who can Apply?
The call is open to second-year Master’s students, doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and researchers working in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants can be of any nationality, but their proposed research must concern one or more countries within IFRA-Nigeria’s geographical mandate: Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Chad or Togo. Projects must fit at least one of the institute’s research axes and involve fieldwork or archival research. Sustainable partnerships with institutions or researchers in the host country are strongly encouraged. Applications can be submitted in either English or French.
How to Apply?
Applicants must prepare one single PDF containing a cover letter of up to one page, a CV of up to three pages, a detailed project budget using IFRA-Nigeria’s template, and a research proposal of no more than four pages excluding bibliography and budget. The proposal must include the research plan, dates, itinerary, objectives, institutional partnerships, valorisation plans and bibliography. The complete PDF must then be submitted through the official Google Form. Incomplete applications are automatically rejected.
