About Organisation
The Lowitja Institute is Australia’s national institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research, committed to advancing community-driven, ethical, and culturally grounded health outcomes. Established to transform the way research is conducted, the Institute ensures Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not only participants but leaders in shaping research priorities and health policies. It supports projects that strengthen community control, build local capacity, and create pathways for sustainable change through Indigenous knowledge systems.
The Lowitja Institute prioritizes collaboration, equity, and respect for Indigenous sovereignty in research. Through initiatives like the GLOWS National Gathering Grant, it fosters opportunities for dialogue, innovation, and partnership among Indigenous communities, healthcare providers, and researchers. By centering lived experience and cultural wisdom, the Institute ensures that every funded project contributes to closing the health gap and promoting self-determination.
About the Grant
The GLOWS National Gathering Grant 2025 provides funding to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations to host a two-day national event focused on HIV and viral hepatitis research. The initiative supports knowledge sharing, partnership-building, and collaborative planning to strengthen community-led health responses. The first day of the gathering will focus on sharing field insights and research learnings, while the second day will feature a community workshop to identify emerging priorities and future directions in Indigenous health research.
Grants of up to AUD 150,000 are available for one year to fund the organisation and delivery of the gathering. Funding decisions will be based on alignment with the GLOWS program’s objectives, proposal quality, and the applicant’s demonstrated capacity to manage and implement the project. The grant embodies the Lowitja Institute’s commitment to fostering Indigenous-led research frameworks that are grounded in culture, experience, and community control.
Who can Apply?
Eligibility for the GLOWS National Gathering Grant is limited to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations or organisations working in genuine partnership with one. Applicants must be governed by a board composed of at least 51% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members and must hold an Australian Business Number (ABN) or Indigenous Business Number (IBN). Eligible organisations should demonstrate the capacity to manage event logistics, engage key stakeholders, and contribute to future research or policy development.
Ineligible applicants include individuals, consultants, for-profit entities, government bodies, public schools or universities, and unincorporated groups. Non-Indigenous organisations can apply only if working under a formal partnership with a community-controlled organisation that takes the lead. The program seeks proposals that reflect community priorities, strengthen cultural identity, and enable inclusive participation. This funding is intended to empower Indigenous-led leadership in research, improve responses to HIV and viral hepatitis, and enhance collaboration between communities and healthcare systems.
How to Apply?
Eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations must submit a detailed proposal outlining the gathering’s purpose, objectives, and implementation plan. Applications should include evidence of governance structure, community engagement, and alignment with GLOWS program priorities. Proposals will be evaluated based on impact, feasibility, and Indigenous leadership. Funding agreements will follow the Lowitja Institute’s terms and conditions.
Application Deadline
The deadline to apply for the GLOWS National Gathering Grant 2025 is 20 October 2025. Successful applicants will receive funding for project implementation lasting up to one year.
