About Organisation

Getty is a globally renowned arts institution headquartered in Los Angeles, dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and showcasing the world’s artistic and cultural legacy. Through a wide range of programs and partnerships, Getty fosters a deeper understanding of art across time and geography. It works collaboratively with experts, institutions, and communities around the world, while also maintaining a strong public engagement through both digital platforms and its two major venues — the Getty Center and the Getty Villa.
The organization combines research, conservation, education, and exhibition to promote critical thought and scholarship in the field of art history and cultural heritage. It is home to a vast library, archives, collections, and a robust calendar of public events, offering an enriching experience to scholars, professionals, and the general public. Through its fellowships, residencies, and funding programs, Getty encourages innovation in the humanities, making it a dynamic space for academic and creative inquiry.

About the Grant

The Getty Scholars Program is a prestigious residential fellowship that supports advanced research in art and its histories, broadly interpreted. Designed to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and scholarly dialogue, the program brings together a diverse cohort of international researchers and professionals for an academic residency at the Getty Center or Getty Villa in Los Angeles.
Fellows work on individual research projects related to an annual theme, drawing from Getty’s extensive resources — including its vast library, archives, and collections. During the residency, scholars actively participate in a vibrant intellectual community, engaging with fellow researchers and contributing to public programs, lectures, or discussions.
Since its inception in 1985, the program has hosted approximately 1,300 scholars from over 50 countries. Each year, around 20 fellowships are awarded from a competitive pool of 300 to 400 applications. The selected projects span wide-ranging topics, geographies, and time periods, from antiquity to contemporary culture. This program is ideal for researchers looking to advance their academic work while contributing to a broader public discourse on the visual arts.

Who can Apply?

The Getty Scholar Grants are designed for established researchers and professionals who have a strong record of scholarly achievement in the fields of art, art history, and closely related disciplines. To be eligible for the Scholar Grant, applicants must have earned their PhD by or before September 1, 2022. However, professionals without a PhD may also be considered if they possess equivalent experience and credentials in their respective fields. This inclusivity allows for a diverse cohort of experts to contribute to and benefit from the program.

Those who completed their doctoral degrees after September 1, 2022, should instead apply for the Postdoctoral Fellowship, which is tailored to emerging scholars at the beginning of their academic careers.

Individuals who have previously received a Getty Residential Grant in any category may reapply after a mandatory six-year interval, provided they meet the current eligibility requirements. The program welcomes applications from candidates across the globe, and encourages projects that engage with interdisciplinary approaches and global themes in the history of art. Applicants should propose research that aligns with the annual theme of the fellowship year and demonstrate how their work will benefit from access to Getty’s resources and scholarly community.
