About Organisation
Established in 1986, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was the first National Law University in India. As a pioneer in legal education, NLSIU has played a pivotal role in transforming the legal education landscape in the country. The institution was founded with a mission to promote legal reform through robust academic training, innovative research, and policy interventions. Over the years, NLSIU has developed a reputation for excellence in legal scholarship and public service. It collaborates with governments and civil society organizations to address complex legal and policy issues through research-driven approaches. The University has cultivated generations of legal professionals, scholars, and public administrators who contribute meaningfully to both national and international legal systems. Its multidisciplinary programmes aim to prepare students for real-world challenges, and its partnerships with state institutions, such as the Government of Meghalaya, further underscore its commitment to legal and policy development.
About the Grant
The P. A. Sangma Fellowship for Legal and Policy Research is a prestigious full-time fellowship jointly offered by NLSIU and the Government of Meghalaya. Now in its fourth cohort (2024), this fellowship provides an opportunity for researchers to engage directly with the social, legal, and economic issues faced by the Sixth Schedule State of Meghalaya. Named in honour of Shri P. A. Sangma, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the fellowship allows fellows to work in close coordination with senior policymakers. Fellows are mentored by both NLSIU faculty and Government-appointed Nodal Officers, ensuring a practical and scholarly perspective to research. The objective is to facilitate meaningful legal and policy interventions through field-based research. The program is scheduled to begin in the first week of July 2024 and is based in Meghalaya. Fellows will contribute to governance and policy formulation while gaining exposure to the challenges of working within regional legal systems.
Who can Apply?
The P. A. Sangma Fellowship invites applications from two specific groups. Firstly, graduates from NLSIU holding degrees in B.A. LL.B (Hons.), LL.M., or Master of Public Policy (M.P.P.) are eligible to apply. Secondly, the fellowship is open to domicile citizens of Meghalaya who possess a law degree from any recognized university. This dual-eligibility structure ensures both the inclusion of academic excellence from NLSIU and the regional perspective from local legal professionals. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in legal and policy research, and a willingness to relocate to Meghalaya for the full duration of the fellowship. They should also possess strong analytical, communication, and drafting skills. Preference may be given to those with prior research experience or involvement in legal reform initiatives. Shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for an interview. Selected fellows will work in collaboration with senior government officials to produce policy reports and recommendations that align with Meghalaya’s socio-economic development needs.
How to Apply?
