About Organisation
For over 130 years, the National Geographic Society has been at the forefront of advancing scientific discovery, exploration, and understanding of our planet. Established in 1888 by 33 pioneering scientists and scholars, the Society was founded with a clear mission—to promote the “increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge.” Since then, it has become a globally recognized institution dedicated to funding projects and individuals who bring forward groundbreaking ideas that expand human understanding of the world and its complexities.
Through its grants and initiatives, the National Geographic Society supports research, conservation, technology, and storytelling efforts that tackle pressing global challenges. Its commitment to fostering curiosity, innovation, and bold exploration continues to shape how we study and protect natural systems while empowering individuals to drive meaningful change. By nurturing projects across diverse disciplines, the Society emphasizes the importance of science-based solutions to sustain both people and the planet. With its rich legacy of impact, the National Geographic Society remains a key supporter of leaders who challenge limits, push boundaries, and inspire communities to protect Earth’s future for generations to come.
About the Grant
The National Geographic Society invites proposals for the Extreme Weather and Natural Hazards Solutions Grant, designed to fund innovative, science-based solutions that address the escalating challenges posed by extreme weather events and natural hazards. With climate change intensifying risks such as floods, hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, heatwaves, and storms, this initiative focuses on fostering adaptability, resilience, and positive outcomes for vulnerable communities and ecosystems.
Applicants are encouraged to design projects that integrate community engagement and stakeholder participation to ensure sustainable, practical impact. Potential project areas may include field research for improved prediction and response, nature-based approaches to resilience, advanced technological solutions, or innovative local-level strategies for adaptation and recovery. Proposals may cover both new initiatives and the continuation of impactful ongoing work.
Selected projects will not only receive funding but also gain access to the National Geographic Explorer Community, where recipients can benefit from training, networking, and additional support for scaling their efforts. By emphasizing both scientific rigor and real-world application, this grant seeks to catalyze solutions that enhance resilience to extreme weather while safeguarding both human communities and natural systems.
Who can Apply?
This funding opportunity is open to individuals aged 18 or older with strong expertise, leadership skills, and the capacity to design and implement impactful, science-based solutions for extreme weather and natural hazards. Applicants should demonstrate proven ability to execute projects effectively, though no formal educational requirements are mandated. Both seasoned experts and emerging leaders are welcome to apply, as long as they can showcase the skills and passion necessary for successful project completion.
Projects may request funding of up to $50,000 USD for a maximum duration of two years. Applications must clearly align with the Society’s budget guidelines and fall under the discipline of science. Proposals are expected to be innovative, measurable, and capable of generating tangible results that benefit both people and ecosystems.
Applicants may submit only one proposal under this funding call, and projects must be delivered in English, though English does not need to be the applicant’s first language. Past National Geographic Explorers, as well as first-time applicants, are eligible. Staff members of the National Geographic Society are not eligible to apply. Successful applicants will join the Explorer Community, gaining access to valuable learning, training, and networking opportunities.
How to Apply?
Interested applicants must submit their proposals through the official online application portal of the National Geographic Society. Proposals should include a detailed project plan, budget, objectives, and measurable outcomes. Only one application per individual will be accepted.
