About Organisation
EUROLakes, supported by the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union, is a pioneering initiative focused on protecting and restoring lake ecosystems across Europe. The project integrates scientific expertise, policy innovation, and local collaboration to design sustainable, nature-based solutions that revitalize degraded freshwater ecosystems. EUROLakes demonstrates effective restoration models through pilot sites, sharing best practices, research insights, and practical tools for environmental resilience. Guided by the “4 Returns Framework,” the initiative aims to restore ecosystem health, enhance biodiversity, support communities, and ensure long-term socio-economic benefits. Through its partnerships with regional authorities and environmental stakeholders, EUROLakes fosters a culture of ecological stewardship and evidence-based environmental management.
About the Grant
The EUROLakes Call for Associated Regions invites applications from European regions that face similar environmental challenges as the project’s demonstration sites. The goal is to replicate and adapt successful nature-based solutions for lake restoration to new local contexts. Selected regions will receive EUR 75,000 to develop and implement restoration models over 20–24 months, with comprehensive support from EUROLakes experts. This collaboration will help regions co-create sustainable strategies for ecosystem recovery, applying the “4 Returns Framework” to generate ecological, social, and economic value while enhancing water quality and biodiversity.
Who can Apply?
Eligible applicants include local or regional authorities from EU Member States (not already in the EUROLakes consortium) and Horizon Europe–associated countries that manage or oversee natural lakes and their catchment areas. Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to sustainable environmental management, the ability to co-develop lake restoration plans, and readiness to implement pilot interventions. Preference will be given to authorities addressing comparable environmental issues—such as water pollution, biodiversity loss, or ecosystem degradation—and possessing the institutional capacity to apply EUROLakes’ methods locally. Collaborative engagement with scientific experts and community stakeholders is strongly encouraged.
How to Apply?
Eligible regions must submit their applications through the EUROLakes portal, detailing their environmental context, project objectives, and plans for applying nature-based restoration models.
Application Deadline
Applications must be submitted by 15 January 2026.
