About Organisation

The Young Researchers Innovation Grants (YRIG) program, supported by the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Research Foundation (CMTRF), is dedicated to accelerating drug development for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). CMTRF, a leading organization in CMT research, promotes early-career innovation through targeted funding initiatives aimed at overcoming critical challenges in the field. With an emphasis on collaborative approaches, the YRIG program fosters partnerships between academia and industry to address key areas like therapeutic target discovery, disease model development, and innovative drug delivery systems. The organization is committed to generating preliminary research data to aid in obtaining larger funding, ultimately aiming to translate research discoveries into clinical applications. CMTRF is deeply invested in supporting young scientists and researchers whose projects have the potential to advance treatment options and optimize CMT drug development. Through the YRIG program, CMTRF seeks to make meaningful strides in the understanding and treatment of CMT, promoting high-impact, rigorously designed projects that bring the field closer to breakthroughs in patient care.

About the Grant

The Young Researchers Innovation Grants (YRIG) program provides funding to advance innovative, small-scale projects aimed at addressing major obstacles in CMT drug development. This initiative offers two grant types: the Predoctoral Grant, aimed at current MD or PhD students, and the Pilot Grant, which supports early-career investigators, including postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty within academia or industry. YRIG’s objective is to equip young scientists with the resources needed to conduct impactful research and gather preliminary data that can attract further funding from sources such as NIH. Key areas of focus for the grant include exploring the blood-nerve barrier, developing novel drug delivery techniques, identifying new therapeutic targets, and enhancing disease models. CMTRF encourages collaborations across academic and industry settings, seeking to stimulate scientific exploration that contributes to advancing CMT drug development.

Who can Apply?

The Young Researchers Innovation Grants cater to two applicant groups: Predoctoral researchers and Pilot researchers. Predoctoral applicants should be doctoral students (MD, PhD, etc.) actively enrolled in a training program and conducting research under the guidance of a PI or in collaboration with external mentors. Eligible applicants should focus on CMT-related research with clear applicability to drug development. Pilot grant applicants must have completed their terminal degree within the last 10 years and be postdoctoral researchers, early-career investigators, or those who have an independent lab or mentorship from an academic or industry PI by the award’s start. Both grant types encourage collaborative research, aiming to support promising scientists capable of conducting independent research in advancing CMT drug treatment.

How to Apply?

Applicants can submit their materials via the online application portal starting December 9, 2024. An optional Letter of Intent can be submitted to receive early feedback.
