Application Deadline:
January 1, 2025
About Organisation
The Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund (SDCBF), established in 1989 by Roger Williams Park Zoo and the Rhode Island Zoological Society, is dedicated to conserving threatened wildlife and habitats worldwide. The Fund emphasizes field-based studies and initiatives that adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to biodiversity and ecosystem preservation. Projects supported include environmental education, habitat restoration, breeding programs, and the development of conservation techniques suitable for natural environments. SDCBF prioritizes initiatives that incorporate local collaborators and align with the conservation objectives of Roger Williams Park Zoo. This funding mechanism represents the Zoo’s commitment to fostering global conservation efforts through innovative and practical solutions.
About the Grant
The Danforth Conservation Grants aim to support projects that contribute to biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystem management. The Fund focuses on field studies, integrative breeding programs, environmental education, and the development of conservation strategies. Priority is given to projects involving local collaborators or aligning with Roger Williams Park Zoo’s conservation portfolio. Projects already funded by the SDCBF may qualify for a second year of funding, provided they follow application guidelines and include a progress report. The grants avoid funding highly invasive research, terminal studies, or specimen collection. Partial funding may be considered for projects with secured support for other components.
Who can Apply?
Eligible applicants must be affiliated with an organization, such as a university, non-governmental organization (NGO), or other entities capable of receiving funding on their behalf. There are no restrictions on the nationality of applicants. Roger Williams Park Zoo does not need to be a direct collaborator for eligibility. Proposals involving elements of completed projects or highly invasive research are not eligible for funding. Projects funded previously by SDCBF may apply for additional funding in subsequent years with the submission of a detailed progress report. Collaborative and sustainable initiatives are strongly encouraged.
How to Apply?
Applicants must submit a complete application, including a filled-out form, a detailed budget, a two-page CV, and two letters of recommendation. Only electronic submissions are accepted.
