About Organisation

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) is a globally recognized nonprofit research organization founded in 1982. Starting as a small collective of Canadian scholars, it has grown into a leader in interdisciplinary research, bringing together over 1,000 researchers from more than 30 countries. CIFAR’s programs span natural sciences, biomedical research, social sciences, and the humanities, driving transformative discoveries that address global challenges. Its community of researchers has been honored with prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize, the Turing Award, and the Breakthrough Prize. CIFAR fosters collaboration between academics, government, industry, and civil society, promoting knowledge exchange and innovation. Its commitment to diversity and global partnerships strengthens efforts to solve critical issues, such as climate change, public health, technology governance, and human rights. Through initiatives like the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program, CIFAR invests in early-career researchers, equipping them with mentorship, leadership skills, and a collaborative environment to develop boundary-pushing research. The organization’s vision is to create new fields of inquiry, foster global networks, and ensure that researchers have the tools to influence scientific progress and societal well-being worldwide.

About the Grant

The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program is designed to support early-career researchers by providing resources, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities to develop groundbreaking interdisciplinary research. Over a two-year period, selected scholars join one of CIFAR’s research networks and work alongside global experts to address pressing scientific and societal challenges. The program emphasizes three key pillars: fostering innovative research, expanding professional networks, and enhancing leadership skills. Scholars participate in workshops, retreats, and meetings where they share work-in-progress, develop new ideas, and explore partnerships. They receive a $10,000 stipend, access to seed funding, and opportunities to engage with leaders in government, industry, and civil society. The program also offers structured leadership training, including science communication, mentorship development, and advocacy strategies. Scholars are encouraged to collaborate across disciplines and regions, ensuring their work contributes to solving global problems. CIFAR supports scholars as they lead new projects, organize events, and influence the next generation of scientific inquiry. The program welcomes applicants from all countries and disciplines, with a focus on high-risk, high-reward research that has the potential to shape the future of science and democracy.
