About Organisation
UNICEF is a global organization committed to safeguarding and advancing the rights and well-being of every child, particularly the most disadvantaged. In India, UNICEF partners with governments, civil society, and communities to design and implement sustainable solutions that address critical issues affecting children, including health, education, protection, and disaster risk management. With a strong focus on equity, UNICEF works to ensure that children from marginalized communities are not left behind in times of crisis. Recognizing the increasing vulnerabilities caused by climate change and natural disasters, the organization prioritizes child-centric disaster risk reduction and the development of responsive social protection systems. By leveraging evidence-based advocacy, technical expertise, and partnerships with local organizations, UNICEF builds resilience within communities while ensuring continuity of essential services for children and their families. In Assam, a state prone to floods, earthquakes, and climate-induced hazards, UNICEF has been actively supporting initiatives that reduce disaster impact on children and strengthen the capacity of institutions to respond effectively. The emphasis is on protecting children from long-term consequences such as disrupted education, increased child marriage, unsafe migration, and the breakdown of essential health and social services, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for every child.
About the Grant
The grant “Strengthening Child-Centric Disaster Risk Reduction and Shock Responsive Social Protection in Assam” is designed to address the recurring humanitarian challenges faced by children and families in the state. Assam experiences some of the highest disaster vulnerabilities in India, with annual floods, climate-related shocks, and seismic risks disrupting essential services and livelihoods. This grant seeks to support civil society partners in developing and institutionalizing approaches that make early warning dissemination more child-focused, while also creating systems that protect children during emergencies. A major focus is the institutionalization of a community feedback protocol within the Inter-Agency Group (IAG) Assam, ensuring that children’s needs and community voices are effectively represented in disaster responses. In addition, the grant will support the scaling up of Community Facilitation and Resource Centres (CFRCs) in two districts, modeled on successful initiatives in Cachar. Through these interventions, the program aims to reduce vulnerabilities, ensure the continuity of education and health services, and strengthen shock-responsive social protection systems. The indicative budget for the grant is INR 22,000,000, with an implementation period from October 2025 to March 2026. The initiative emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and local ownership to build resilient communities centered around children’s rights and safety.
