About Organisation

The British Ecological Society (BES) envisions a world inspired, informed, and influenced by ecology. Its mission is to generate, communicate, and promote ecological knowledge and solutions. The society actively supports ecological research, training, and public engagement initiatives. BES provides grants to early-career ecologists, helping them fund research, travel, and training to advance their work in ecological science. With an annual grant distribution exceeding £400,000 globally, the society plays a significant role in fostering ecological advancements and outreach. Through its funding programs, BES aims to expand the reach of ecological science, making it accessible to diverse audiences. By encouraging innovative communication methods, BES ensures that ecological research and its applications are understood by the public, policymakers, and professionals across disciplines. The society also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinary efforts to address environmental challenges effectively. Through its various initiatives, BES continues to promote evidence-based ecological solutions, strengthen awareness about ecological careers, and inspire individuals to contribute towards environmental sustainability. The organization remains committed to supporting projects that highlight the relevance of ecology and encourage proactive environmental actions, ultimately striving to create a more informed and engaged global community in ecological science.

About the Grant

The British Ecological Society offers funding of up to £2,000 to individuals, teams, and organizations for projects that engage public audiences with ecological science. This grant aims to make ecological research accessible and exciting by supporting innovative outreach and public engagement activities. It encourages projects that communicate the significance of ecological science, promote ecological careers, and inspire individuals to take actions benefiting the environment. Projects can take various formats, including in-person events, digital initiatives, or physical resources. The grant particularly supports activities that introduce novel methods of engaging audiences, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and create materials that can be used by others in future ecological outreach efforts. Additionally, projects that help individuals develop skills in communicating ecological science are encouraged. Applications should demonstrate a strong connection to the research community while focusing on non-academic audiences. BES prioritizes proposals that offer impactful engagement and contribute to public understanding of ecological challenges and solutions. The funding supports a diverse range of outreach initiatives that align with BES’s core aims of raising awareness about ecology, inspiring future ecologists, and fostering positive environmental change through scientific knowledge and action.

Who can Apply?

The grant is open to BES members who are actively involved in ecological outreach and engagement. The lead applicant must be a BES member and should oversee the project’s execution and reporting. Individuals, teams, and organizations at any experience level can apply, including collaborations between multiple applicants. Projects should be completed within 12 months and must target non-academic audiences, ensuring direct interaction with the public. Applications from schools and museums are accepted, but projects must extend outreach beyond classroom settings. Additionally, projects must demonstrate a connection to the wider research community at regional, national, or international levels. There are no geographic restrictions, allowing applicants from any location to propose engagement initiatives. However, applicants can receive only one grant per year and no more than three grants within five years. Repeat applications for annual events will be considered only if they introduce novel ideas and improvements. Failure to submit a satisfactory report at the project’s conclusion will result in ineligibility for future grants. The grant supports a wide range of outreach activities that effectively communicate ecological science and its impact to the general public.
