Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council is a Government of India enterprise established under the Department of Biotechnology to strengthen the country’s biotechnology ecosystem. As a not-for-profit public sector organisation, BIRAC supports innovation by connecting industry and academia. It offers funding, mentorship, and technology transfer support to startups and SMEs. Through various initiatives, BIRAC promotes high-quality, affordable product development using advanced technologies. The organisation plays a key role in bridging research and commercialization gaps while enabling Indian biotech companies to become globally competitive and address national healthcare, agriculture, and industrial challenges.

About the Grant

The BIRAC Product Commercialization Program (PCP) Fund supports Indian biotech startups in transitioning market-ready innovations into full-scale commercialization. It focuses on technologies that have reached Technology Readiness Level 7 or above, ensuring they are validated and ready for market entry. The fund helps cover critical gaps such as pilot validation, market preparation, and large-scale deployment. It complements existing BIRAC schemes that primarily support early-stage development. By accelerating commercialization, the program enables startups to bring impactful biotech products to market, strengthen innovation ecosystems, and address national priorities through scalable and sustainable solutions.

Who can Apply?

Eligible applicants include Indian startups in the biotechnology sector that are incorporated within the last 10 years. The startup must have at least 51% Indian shareholding, certified by a Chartered Accountant or Company Secretary with valid documentation. Additionally, the majority shareholders must be Indian citizens holding valid passports. Applicants should have a product or technology that has reached Technology Readiness Level 7 or higher, indicating readiness for commercialization. The product should address nationally relevant challenges and demonstrate potential for market success. Startups may apply regardless of whether they previously received funding from BIRAC programs.
