About Organisation

Tech Policy Press is a nonprofit media organization dedicated to fostering critical conversations at the intersection of technology and democracy. It aims to encourage new ideas, debates, and public engagement during a time when democratic institutions face unprecedented challenges globally. Recognizing the profound influence technology companies and governments wield, Tech Policy Press seeks to advance pro-democracy initiatives by elevating thoughtful analysis, journalism, and policy discourse. Since its inception in 2023, the organization has supported fellows from diverse geographies and backgrounds, allowing them to investigate pressing issues such as digital rights, artificial intelligence governance, and tech regulation. By bridging the gap between technology, policy, and public awareness, Tech Policy Press aspires to provide platforms where marginalized communities, often excluded from global conversations, can share their perspectives. The organization nurtures independent, critical thinking and amplifies the voices of journalists, researchers, and policymakers who seek to understand and reshape the relationship between technology and societal well-being. Through its fellowship program and other initiatives, Tech Policy Press plays a pivotal role in promoting inclusive, democratic approaches to emerging technological challenges and ensuring that technology serves humanity’s collective interests.

About the Grant

The Tech Policy Press Fellowship Program for 2026 offers a year-long, part-time fellowship designed to support journalists, researchers, and policy professionals working on topics related to technology and democracy. Fellows will pursue independent reporting and analysis projects that explore urgent global issues, with a focus on regions and communities often overlooked in mainstream tech policy discussions. The fellowship encourages original journalism and insightful policy analysis that informs both the public and decision-makers. Fellows will receive a stipend of $10,000 to support their work while remaining independent contributors. They will also benefit from editorial guidance, participate in monthly cohort meetings, and exchange ideas with an international network of experts. Since its launch, the fellowship has supported 15 fellows from seven countries, who have covered topics such as AI governance, corporate-state relationships, and digital rights. The program is committed to elevating voices from underrepresented communities and amplifying research that addresses technology’s role in democracy and societal well-being. Fellows are expected to produce regular outputs, collaborate with others, and remain accountable through structured feedback, monthly meetings, and clear project milestones.

Who can Apply?

The fellowship is open to journalists, researchers, and public policy professionals with expertise or a strong background in technology policy or its intersection with democracy and society. Applicants should be prepared to pursue a well-defined topic, explaining how their work contributes to public discourse or policy development. The program welcomes applicants from diverse geographies and underrepresented communities, encouraging perspectives that challenge dominant narratives in global tech policy. Fellows will work remotely as independent contractors while committing to regular outputs and engagement with the editorial team and fellow cohort members. Key requirements include a clear project proposal, demonstrated understanding of relevant issues, and the ability to meet deadlines. Applicants should have prior publications or research experience in tech-related areas and a commitment to transparency, including disclosing any conflicts of interest. While fellows can adjust topics as the program progresses, they must articulate their focus from the start. The fellowship prioritizes projects that are community-centered and promote democratic values. It is ideal for applicants with experience or interest in areas such as artificial intelligence governance, digital rights, regulatory frameworks, or social impacts of technology, especially in contexts where voices are marginalized or absent from mainstream discourse.
