About Organisation
Pure Earth, formerly known as the Blacksmith Institute, is an international nonprofit dedicated to solving toxic pollution problems that impact human health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Since its inception, Pure Earth has been working across the globe to identify, mitigate, and prevent toxic threats, with a strong focus on lead exposure and chemical pollution that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations such as children. With operations in over 50 countries, Pure Earth combines research, capacity-building, advocacy, and innovative interventions to address pollution and safeguard communities. The organization partners with governments, academic institutions, NGOs, and local stakeholders to create scalable, sustainable solutions while influencing global policies on environmental health. Pure Earth’s mission is not just to treat the symptoms of pollution but to eliminate toxic threats at their source, promoting healthier environments and stronger communities. Its commitment to building awareness, strengthening local action, and fostering global cooperation makes it a leading force in reducing pollution-related diseases and protecting future generations.
About the Grant
The Pure Earth Opportunity Fund (Spring) is designed to support innovative projects that address the global challenge of lead exposure and toxic pollution. This funding initiative aims to advance knowledge, build awareness, and foster interventions that prevent toxic exposure while protecting public health. The grants are intended for organizations proposing practical, scalable, and impactful solutions to reduce pollution in vulnerable communities worldwide. Applicants are encouraged to design projects that combine scientific rigor with community-driven approaches, ensuring both immediate outcomes and long-term sustainability. Key focus areas may include improving pollution data collection, promoting health interventions, developing or scaling up innovative remediation methods, strengthening policies and regulations, and enhancing local capacity to manage pollution risks. Pure Earth places particular emphasis on projects that generate strong evidence, create replicable models, and can influence policy or catalyze larger initiatives. By supporting such projects, the Opportunity Fund aims to accelerate global efforts to eliminate lead poisoning and mitigate toxic threats, directly contributing to the protection of children and communities most at risk.
Who can Apply?
The grant is open to NGOs, nonprofit organizations, and academic institutions working on environmental health, toxic pollution, and related issues. Applicants must demonstrate proven capacity to design and implement research, intervention, or advocacy projects in line with Pure Earth’s mission. Eligible projects should focus on regions or populations where toxic exposure, especially from lead, poses a critical health risk. Applicants should ideally have experience working with local governments, communities, and other stakeholders to ensure broad impact and sustainability of proposed initiatives. Collaborations between organizations and multidisciplinary teams are highly encouraged, as transdisciplinary approaches often generate more comprehensive solutions to complex pollution challenges. Eligible citizenships include applicants from multiple countries worldwide, covering Africa, Asia, Europe (EU and non-EU), and beyond, where toxic pollution remains a pressing concern. Proposals that emphasize inclusion, capacity-building, and direct community engagement will be prioritized. Additionally, applicants must present a clear implementation plan, measurable outcomes, and strong potential for scalability or replication across different contexts.
How to Apply?
Interested NGOs, nonprofits, and academic institutions can submit a detailed proposal highlighting project objectives, methodology, expected outcomes, and budget. Applications must demonstrate how the project contributes to reducing toxic pollution and protecting public health, with emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and measurable impact.
