About Organisation

Wild Animal Initiative is dedicated to advancing the science that improves the lives of wild animals. Despite the fact that most of the world’s animals live in natural habitats, scientific understanding of their well-being remains limited. The organization recognizes the urgent need for research that examines how various environmental and biological factors influence the welfare of wild animals and how humans can responsibly mitigate their suffering. By fostering innovative and ethical research, Wild Animal Initiative aims to establish wild animal welfare as a respected and evidence-based scientific field. Its mission revolves around bridging gaps in knowledge, validating research methods, and empowering researchers to create meaningful, long-term impacts on wildlife welfare. Through funding, collaboration, and advocacy, the organization accelerates scientific progress and encourages global cooperation to promote the well-being of animals living in the wild.

About the Grant

The Wild Animal Initiative’s Discovery Grants program supports projects that expand the evidence base for wild animal welfare research. This program is designed to fund initiatives that develop, validate, and apply new methods to better understand and enhance the well-being of wild animals. Each funding cycle focuses on broad, welfare-related themes that align with the organization’s core research priorities. The grants encourage cost-effective projects that contribute to building a solid scientific foundation in this emerging field. Successful proposals are expected to focus on activities that uniquely contribute to understanding and improving wild animal welfare rather than general conservation goals. The total grant funding ranges between USD 10,000 and 50,000 for projects lasting up to three years. Funding may cover direct research costs such as materials and supplies, and in some cases, stipends or salaries, provided they are justified within the project’s objectives.

Who can Apply?

The Discovery Grants are open to researchers worldwide, particularly early-career scientists such as postdoctoral fellows and PhD students who are building a long-term career in wild animal welfare science. Established researchers aiming to expand their work into this field are also welcome to apply. Eligible projects may either be standalone studies or extensions of ongoing research that incorporate a new wild animal welfare component. Each project must be led by a principal investigator affiliated with a recognized research institution, such as a university or government agency. If the project involves fieldwork, it must include collaborators who are residents of all countries where the research will occur. NGOs conducting projects must be registered in the same country where fieldwork is based. The program prioritizes funding for direct research costs like materials and equipment but may also support stipends, salaries, or other justified expenses. The primary goal is to ensure resources are allocated efficiently to maximize welfare-related outcomes.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest by November 14, 2025. They are encouraged to review the detailed themes outlined by Wild Animal Initiative before preparing proposals. Interested candidates can seek feedback during proposal development by contacting the organization for guidance or clarification. Selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals after the initial review.

Application Deadline

The deadline for submitting Expressions of Interest for the Discovery Grants program is November 14, 2025. Late submissions will not be considered under any circumstances.
