About Organisation

Algalita is a globally recognised environmental nonprofit that has been at the forefront of addressing plastic pollution for nearly three decades. It was among the first organisations to identify and raise awareness about large-scale ocean plastic accumulation, including what is now widely known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Through research, education, and advocacy, Algalita connects scientists, educators, activists, industry leaders, and youth worldwide. The organisation focuses on empowering learners to understand the systemic causes of plastic pollution and take informed action. Algalita also leads the Wayfinder Society, supporting educators and students with structured environmental learning experiences.

About the Grant

The Wayfinder Society Student Mini Grants support student-led projects that address the root causes of plastic pollution in schools and communities. Rather than focusing only on litter, the grant encourages solutions that challenge production, consumption, and disposal systems. Funded projects may include education initiatives, reuse systems, repair programs, policy advocacy, creative campaigns, or community research. Each selected project receives financial support along with mentorship from Algalita staff throughout the school year. For the 2025–2026 cycle, ten student projects will be funded, helping young changemakers turn ideas into long-term, community-based solutions to plastic pollution.

Who can Apply?

The mini grants are open to students aged 11 to 25 from anywhere in the world who are leading or developing projects focused on reducing plastic pollution. Applicants may work individually or as part of a school or community initiative but must identify an adult advisor for guidance. Projects can be new or existing and should address the underlying causes of plastic waste. Applicants must complete required learning actions before applying and demonstrate a clear plan for impact. Selection prioritises student leadership, creativity, feasibility, and potential for long-term environmental change.

How to Apply?

Applicants must create a Wayfinder Society student or individual account and complete two required learning actions related to plastic systems. After completing these steps, students must submit the full application by the stated deadline. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview with judges, followed by a video call with Algalita staff along with their adult advisor before final selection.

Application Deadline

Applications for the Wayfinder Society Student Mini Grants must be submitted by 15 January 2026. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered for the current grant cycle.
