About Organisation
FORGE is a collaborative network of philanthropic donors committed to creating an inclusive and equitable global economy. By combining expertise and resources from ten funders, FORGE empowers community and worker-led movements to drive systemic change at the intersection of labor rights, democracy, and social justice. The Democracy at Work Fund (DAWF), managed by FORGE, was established to strengthen grassroots worker organizations across the Global South. It focuses on building resilience among frontline workers’ groups that advocate for fair wages, social protections, gender equality, and just transitions in the face of technological and environmental change. In its earlier rounds, DAWF supported initiatives involving diverse groups such as domestic workers in South Africa, nurses in Uganda, and migrant fishers in Taiwan. Through collaborative philanthropy, FORGE and DAWF aim to sustain and scale worker-led organizing that enhances civic participation, collective bargaining power, and long-term economic justice globally.
About the Grant
The Democracy at Work Fund 2025/2026 provides financial support to worker-led organizations striving to strengthen labor movements, protect worker rights, and promote democratic engagement. Grants ranging from USD 10,000 to 80,000 will be awarded for projects lasting up to 18 months, starting in February 2026. The fund prioritizes initiatives that enhance resilience among workers facing global challenges such as economic inequality, climate crises, technological disruption, migration, and gender-based violence. Eligible projects may focus on organizing informal or underrepresented workers, improving inclusion, building alliances with other social movements, or addressing systemic labor injustices. The program particularly values proposals integrating gender justice, racial equality, and climate adaptation into worker advocacy. By strengthening local leadership and amplifying worker voices, the fund seeks to foster transformative, community-based change across diverse sectors and regions.
Who can Apply?
Applications are open to worker-led organizations, including trade unions, cooperatives, and hybrid associations actively engaged in labor organizing, collective bargaining, or advocacy. Eligible applicants must demonstrate democratic leadership structures, transparent operations, and a proven commitment to advancing worker rights. Priority will be given to organizations led by women and underrepresented groups, especially those representing informal, migrant, or platform workers. The fund supports locally based organizations rather than international entities, ensuring community ownership and sustainability. Proposals involving collaboration between multiple organizations are welcome, provided each group’s roles are clearly defined. The 2025/2026 call targets initiatives based in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, Argentina, and Brazil. Regional or cross-country partnerships within these countries may also be considered. Budgets should align with project goals and demonstrate cost-effectiveness while focusing on long-term impact and worker empowerment.
