Founded in 1817, the Senckenberg – Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research (SGN) is one of Europe’s leading research institutions in biodiversity and natural sciences. Based in Frankfurt, with additional museums in Görlitz and Dresden, Senckenberg supports eight research institutes and three natural history museums. With nearly 900 staff members, including over 300 scientists, the institution advances research in biodiversity, earth systems, anthropology, geology, genomics, conservation ecology, and collection-based sciences. Senckenberg also houses over 41 million collection objects, making it one of the largest natural history institutions in Europe.
About the Grant
The Senckenberg Global Fellowship supports highly motivated early-career scientists from the Global South, including doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers. Fellowships are awarded for three months, with selected cases extending up to six months. Fellows gain access to Senckenberg’s extensive collections, laboratories, research infrastructure, libraries, and scientific expertise. The program aims to strengthen global research collaboration, foster knowledge exchange, and support high-quality research projects conducted in partnership with a Senckenberg host scientist.
Who can Apply?
Applicants must be from countries of the Global South and hold a Master’s or PhD degree relevant to Senckenberg’s research areas. Candidates must identify and collaborate with a Senckenberg host scientist to develop a joint research proposal. Applicants cannot receive parallel project funding during the fellowship period. The application review process may take up to eight weeks, and approved fellowships must begin within three months of acceptance.
