About Organisation

The New India Foundation (NIF), headquartered in Bengaluru, is a philanthropic institution dedicated to advancing rigorous and relevant scholarship on post-Independence India. It supports research that deepens public understanding of India’s political, social, and cultural transformations since 1947. By addressing gaps in historical and social science narratives, NIF works to broaden perspectives beyond dominant frameworks. Through fellowships, translations, and research support, the Foundation aims to make significant yet underrepresented scholarly work accessible to wider audiences, strengthening India’s intellectual and historical discourse.

About the Grant

The NIF Translation Fellowship supports the translation of significant non-fiction works from Indian languages into English. Round 3 of the fellowship focuses on texts published from 1850 onwards, enabling wider access to important ideas, histories, and debates originally produced in Indian languages. By supporting translations across ten major languages, the fellowship seeks to bridge linguistic divides and enrich scholarship on Independent India. Each selected fellow receives substantial financial support to undertake high-quality translation work that contributes meaningfully to academic and public knowledge.

Who can Apply?

The fellowship is open to translators working with non-fiction texts originally published in Assamese, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil, or Urdu. Applicants should propose the translation of works published from 1850 onwards that align with the Foundation’s objective of fostering scholarship on modern and contemporary India. Translators must demonstrate linguistic proficiency in both the source language and English, along with the capacity to deliver accurate, high-quality translations suitable for academic and general readerships.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit their fellowship applications during the open call period for Round 3. Proposals should include details of the selected text, its significance, and the applicant’s translation credentials. Completed applications must be submitted by the stated deadline following the prescribed process outlined by the Foundation.

Application Deadline

Applications for the New India Foundation Translation Fellowship must be submitted by 31 December 2025, as part of Round 3 of the fellowship cycle.
