About Organisation
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism works to understand and shape the future of journalism across the world. It brings together journalists, scholars, media leaders, and policymakers to examine how journalism is changing and how it can better serve the public. The Institute promotes independent, ethical, and high-quality journalism through research, debate, and engagement. With a strong belief in the role of truthful reporting and informed societies, it supports innovation in newsrooms and encourages critical reflection on the media industry and its evolving challenges.
About the Grant
The Journalist Fellowship Programme is a prestigious opportunity for mid-career journalists to step away from daily newsroom pressures and engage deeply with journalism-related research. Fellows spend a few months exploring a self-designed project that aligns with their professional interests and newsroom needs. The programme combines independent research with seminars, peer discussions, and networking opportunities. Most fellowships are fully funded and include a stipend for living and travel expenses. Fellows are expected to return to journalism after completing the programme, applying their learning to their careers and organisations.
Who can Apply?
The fellowship is open to practising journalists and editors from across the world with a minimum of five years of professional journalistic experience, or equivalent expertise in rare cases. Freelance journalists are eligible to apply. Applicants must be actively engaged in journalism and plan to return to the profession after the fellowship. Those working in public relations, corporate communications, or public affairs are not eligible. The programme welcomes applicants from all regions, including Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, and Latin America. English proficiency is required for participation.
How to Apply?
Eligible applicants must submit a complete application including a one-page project statement, a 150-word project summary, a one-page motivation statement, a two-page CV, and two letters of reference. All documents should be prepared as PDFs and submitted before the deadline. Applicants are encouraged to review programme guidelines and frequently asked questions before applying.
Application Deadline
Applications for the Journalist Fellowship Programme must be submitted by 13 February 2026. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered under any circumstances.
