About Organisation

Roger Williams Park Zoo, established in 1872 in Providence, Rhode Island, is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. As a leader in conservation and animal care, the zoo is dedicated to engaging the public in wildlife conservation through immersive experiences and education. Over the years, it has evolved from a small collection of animal exhibits into a globally recognized institution for biodiversity preservation and sustainable wildlife management. Operated in partnership with the Rhode Island Zoological Society, the zoo is committed to fostering conservation ethics through research, fieldwork, and community engagement. Its initiatives emphasize global biodiversity protection, habitat restoration, and public education, encouraging visitors and partners alike to take an active role in conserving the planet’s natural heritage.

About the Grant

The Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund (SDCBF), established in 1989 by Roger Williams Park Zoo and the Rhode Island Zoological Society, supports global projects that protect threatened wildlife and ecosystems. The grant funds field studies, environmental education programs, breeding efforts, and the development of conservation techniques that can be applied in natural environments. Multidisciplinary and collaborative projects, particularly those involving local partners or aligning with RWPZoo’s conservation priorities, are given preference. Partial funding may also be considered for independently viable project components or projects with additional secured funding. The SDCBF prioritizes innovation, ethical research, and long-term ecological impact while discouraging invasive or terminal studies.

Who can Apply?

Eligible applicants must be affiliated with an organization such as a university, NGO, or research institute capable of receiving funds—individual applications are not accepted. There are no nationality restrictions, but all proposals must be submitted in English. Projects should be applicant-developed, as the use of AI tools for writing or editing submissions is strictly prohibited. Applications using generative AI will be deemed ineligible. Expenses for activities completed before funding are not eligible for reimbursement. Proposals involving invasive research or specimen collection will not be considered. Previously funded projects may apply for a second year of support by submitting a new application along with a progress report from the first grant cycle. Preference is given to projects with in-country collaboration and those aligned with RWPZoo’s conservation goals.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit a completed proposal in English through the official SDCBF 2026 grant application portal by the stated deadline. Proposals should clearly outline objectives, methods, timelines, budgets, and expected conservation impact. Previously funded projects must include a progress report. AI-generated applications are not accepted.

Application Deadline

Applications for the 2026 Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund are open until January 1, 2026. Proposals must be submitted before the deadline for consideration.
